Summary of the role

The Student Employability and Development Team within Student Employability and Academic Success (SEAS) at the University of Exeter is recruiting for an Employability and Placement Adviser. The Employability and Placements Adviser will sit within the central Skills Team, will be line managed by the Employability and Careers Consultant (Skills) and will work with taught students across all years and disciplines of study.

The role is student facing and will include providing 'one to one' careers advice to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, delivery of personal and professional development employability skills sessions and presentations, and developing related online careers education materials. They will contribute to planning, development, coordination and delivery of employability provision via the central and Faculty teams as part of the portfolio of activity delivered by SEAS.

We will be using a blended delivery model therefore, the post holder must be confident in both online and face to face delivery. The main aspects of the role include:

  • Central one to one careers advice appointments with all taught student groups across the university covering topics including, but not exclusive of, such as: CVs, Cover Letters, Personal Statements, Interviews and Job Hunting.  
  • Development and delivery of large group advice sessions on the above topics. 
  • Development and delivery of experiential personal and professional skill development sessions, including, but not exclusive of, topics such as: Personal Resilience, Problem Solving, Time and Stress Management, Leadership, Strategic Thinking, Teamwork and Networking.
  • Supporting central SEAS programmes such as Create Your Futurem Grand Challenges, The Exeter Award and The Exeter Leaders Award. 
  • Develop and maintain complementary e-learning materials to support the central skills and advice curriculum.

    Organisational Context

    Student Employability and Academic Success (SEAS) within the Directorate of Education and Student Support (ESS) SEAS resides within the Education and Student Support Directorate which is responsible for providing key education and administrative support activities that underpin the student experience. SEAS consists of professional services teams that provide a portfolio of educational activities to assist students with the development of their academic, professional, personal, career and employability attributes throughout their time at University, including global experience opportunities. Provision is delivered within the curriculum, and in collaboration with colleges and academic departments, through extra-curricular activity and through facilitating access to work and study opportunities on campus, across the UK and globally. SEAS colleagues work collaboratively in the delivery of such provision with students, academics, employers, business intermediaries, alumni, other professional services, University stakeholders and higher education partners. SEAS collates data for internal management purposes and contributes to mandatory data compliance reporting for Government and other external stakeholders.

    The Team

    The Student Employability and Development team consists of four teams delivering a wide range of services to facilitate the development of personal and professional skills, careers advice and guidance, placement learning and extra-curricular employability programmes in order to support student progression into graduate-level employment. The team facilitates the creation and signposting to various work-based learning opportunities (including placements, and programmes) that are accessible through central SEAS services and through degree programmes for students of all study levels and disciplines.
