The Wellcome - MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) is an international centre of excellence for stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Scientists in the Institute collaborate to advance our knowledge of various stem cell types and their developmental origins and to perform pioneering work in translational research areas, providing the foundation for new medical treatments (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/ ). CSCI is based in the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

We are seeking an Electron Microscopy Technician to join the Advanced Microscopy Facility team in the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre. The role holder will report to the Facility Manager and provide technical support for the development and delivery of a professional EM service. This will include EM sample preparation, performing routine imaging and training researchers to use equipment correctly and safely. The facility is equipped with a Hitachi HT7800 120kV transmission electron microscope and TESCAN Clara scanning electron microscope, with ConnectomX Katana for serial block-face SEM.

Duties include taking responsibility for Facility equipment, carrying out routine maintenance and liaising with engineers as required. The role holder will implement systems for sample management and equipment booking, keep accurate records and contribute towards the management of health and safety. They will collaborate with researchers to design, develop and modify experimental protocols and techniques.

The ideal candidate will be qualified to degree level /level 6 vocational qualification or have an equivalent level of experience. Practical experience in digital TEM and SEM, biological sample embedding and cutting, cryo-preparation of biological samples and critical point drying is essential.

This role will require excellent communication skills, a high level of organisation, attention to detail and the ability to prioritise work. At times you may be required to work alone or as part of a team.

This is a full-time role of 36.5 hours per week.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2022 in the first instance.
