The University of Warwick seeks an Electrical Technician to work within our electrical services team at the Warwick University Estates division. You'll provide efficient responses to electrical and mechanical system issues, perform installations, and ensure statutory compliance across campus buildings.

Additionally, those fully qualified you will receive two non-pensionable market supplements to a total of £2000.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical

Handle job requests and ensure safe, efficient resolution within SLAs.

Deal with emergency situations ensuring each job is resolved on systems which include:

  • Power supplies
  • Emergency Lighting Systems
  • Lighting and Lighting control systems
  • Alarm systems
  • Motors
  • BMS Controls
  • Portable appliances

Maintain portable appliances (planned & reactive). Lead other trades for uptime. Ensure compliance with tests & inspections. including:

  • Periodic Inspection and Testing
  • Emergency Lighting Testing
  • Fire Alarm Testing
  • Portable Appliance Testing
  • Defective repair works
  • Plan & assess job: time, equipment, cost, by liaising with supervisor if needed.
  • Troubleshoot problems: diagnose, recommend solutions, escalate if needed.
  • Advise on new installations. Assist with project prep, fabrication & installation.
  • Take a leading role within the Electrical Services team with the installation of minor power systems.

Health and Safety and compliance

  • Assess task risks & follow risk plans in conjunction with manager. Work in diverse settings.
  • Actively participating in department hazard identification and risk assessment exercises.
  • Responsible for delivering statutory compliance tasks, ensuring these are correctly delivered and recorded appropriately.
  • Understand and utilise record drawings including asbestos and fire drawings.

Organisation

  • Prioritize tasks considering the following to ensure job completion:
    • Problem scope & urgency
    • People impacted
    • Building usage
    • Access needs (arrange with security)
  • Record resolutions and feedback to problems on work instructions, complete electronic timesheets, service records and other work-related paperwork in priority order.
  • Calculate and order the correct number of materials needed for each job using the ordering system.

Financial

  • Provide estimated costs for contracted services and minor works.
  • Oversee small project execution following department guidelines, using approved contractors, and meeting budget, schedule, and compliance standards.
  • Advise on project budgets and ensure work meets compliance standards while minimizing disruption.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contractors on maintenance plans.
  • Provide technical advice for high-quality electrical services.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Skills and Experience:

Essential

  • Electrical apprenticeship or equivalent experience (commercial, industrial, domestic)
  • NVQ Level 3 (Electrical Installation/Maintenance).
  • Relevant electrical certifications (City & Guilds 236 part 1, 2 or 2330 Levels 2 and 3 (AM2)).
  • BS 7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations knowledge.
  • City and Guilds 2395, Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations.
  • IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent) with strong health & safety understanding.
  • Ability to work according to electrical regulations and safety legislation in accordance with BS7671 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and Electricity at Work Act.
  • Excellent understanding of electrical compliance.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills.
  • Experience handling high volume of service calls efficiently.
  • Proven problem-solving and initiative to investigate and diagnose problems.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Written and basic IT skills for recordkeeping.
  • Planned preventative maintenance experience.
  • Safe use of lifting equipment and mobile scaffolding.
  • Awareness of asbestos materials.
  • A full, clean UK or EU equivalent driving licence is required for operating company vehicles, transporting materials and equipment to worksites, and ensuring efficient job completion.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems in accordance with BS 5839.
  • Experience of working as LV/HV AP.
  • Safe Entry into Confined spaces using emergency escape breathing apparatus.
  • Understanding of the operation of mechanical building systems.
