Location: London, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 11 Nov 2021

Job description

King’s Foundations are looking for experienced and suitably qualified teachers of English for Academic Purposes who are keen to join King’s Foundations – a successful, friendly and thriving department located in the heart of London and the university.

As EAP Tutor at King’s Foundations, you will be teaching highly capable and motivated international students of all ages and backgrounds across the full range of our programmes, including the Foundation and Pre-sessional, both on campus and online. In addition, you will be contributing to the design, development and delivery of short and/or bespoke courses.

You will also provide academic and pastoral support as personal tutor to a group of tutees, who will include under-18s. Please note that an enhanced check by the Disclosure and Barring Service is a prerequisite for this role.

Although King’s Foundations is based in the iconic Bush House, a Grade II listed building that formerly housed the BBC World Service, you may also be required to work on any of the King’s campuses, or from home.  Please note, all EAP Tutors are required to teach on our 6-week Pre-sessional programme, which means annual leave during this time is normally not permitted.

King’s values the diversity of its staff and student body, and recognises that this is both a strength and a defining feature of King’s as a London university in a global context. We therefore particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups.

When applying for the role, please address each Essential and Desirable criterion in the person specification using separate headings.

King’s Education

King’s Foundations is part of the newly formed King’s Education function. King’s Education brings together King’s Foundations, Summer, Modern Language Centre, King’s Online and King’s Professional & Executive Development into one home. All of the areas are well-established, with the new function providing a stronger platform for the areas to work collaboratively with our faculties, offering greater impact around educational innovation and transformational learning experiences for our students. King’s Foundations reports to the Executive Director of King’s Education. This post reports to the Executive Director of King’s Foundations and will have a dotted line to the King’s Education Strategic Operations Director.

King’s Foundations

King’s Foundations is accredited by the British Council and is recognised as a country-leading centre of excellence for EAP teaching[1]. In our recent British Council inspection of October 2017, the King’s Foundations was awarded twelve areas of strength, which puts King’s as joint first among Higher Education Language Centres in the UK. However, the King’s Foundations’ dedication to excellent teaching extends well beyond the bounds of EAP: on our Foundation programmes, we offer a diversity of modules, ranging from Chemistry to Liberal Arts, Computer Science to Economics and we welcome students from over 60 different countries.

We are a central teaching department that works across the whole university. Our role is to provide preparatory pathways for students with the academic potential to succeed at degree level. Our vision is to be a global leader in high quality, integrated and student focused pathway provision, where our students articulate into their degree as engaged, effective and independent learners. To achieve this, we offer innovative programme choice, challenge our students to achieve their potential and prioritise a rounded approach to the overall student experience. The department consists of a rapidly growing team of highly experienced teaching and professional services staff, (around 70 staff currently) all of whom understand the problems and anxieties international students face when coming to Britain.

The department reports directly to the Senior Vice-President/Vice Principal Operations. We offer programmes throughout the year. Our main year round programme is the Foundation programme, which supports students of excellent potential in improving their academic subject and study skills knowledge, as well as providing a supportive environment for transitioning into university life. Our main summer programme is our Pre-sessional, which we deliver both online and on campus. We also offer a General Pre-Master’s Programme, skills support across the university and bespoke courses for a variety of public and private sector organisations. Details on all programmes can be found on the department’s website https://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/foundations  King’s has an ambitious international and education strategy to be realised over the next ten years and the King’s Foundations is an essential part of the delivery of these aims. We are currently in the process of significantly expanding what we deliver and how we deliver it. This strategy covers expansion of our programmes and a flexibility of approach in how we deliver all or part of programmes. This strategy sees a significant increase in the number of students across programmes as well as significant investment in both our staff numbers and our premises.
