The Faculty of Arts invites applications for a DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
to a fixed-term employment from 01 May 2023 to 30 April 2024. The trial period is no more than 6 months. The position is in the Department of Cultures, and the doctoral researcher works for the project “The EU in the Volatile Indo-Pacific Region (EUVIP)”.
EUVIP aims at bringing Europe more prominently in the Indo-Pacific through answering the puzzle: How can the European Union (EU), an economically influential actor who lacks military power, play a more significant role in the Indo-Pacific, and contribute to maintaining the multilateral, rules-based regional order endangered by the Sino-US power rivalry? Through its concise training, research, communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities EUVIP will significantly contribute to shaping the new, rapidly developing academic field of Indo-Pacific Studies. The project will raise the awareness of the stakeholders (academia, civil society, politics, and broad public) of the strategic, political, and economic significance of the volatile Indo-Pacific region for Europe and for a values-based European approach towards this region. The doctoral researcher’s tasks in EUVIP is to assist in research and managing the project. A doctoral researcher’s main duty is their dissertation work and post-graduate studies. No more than 5 % of annual working time is used for teaching, and it is recommended that teaching is linked to the individual’s own research interest where possible.
SELECTION CRITERIA
An appointee to the position of doctoral researcher shall hold a second-cycle degree and the right to complete a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki or shall be granted the right to complete a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki during the trial period at the beginning of the employment relationship. Other requirements shall include an approved research proposal, the ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies and otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal. In addition, a degree in Asian Studies and/or Political Sciences and language skills in Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, or Korean will be desired.
WHAT WE OFFER
The salary will be based on levels 2-4 the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
