Applications from suitably qualified and highly experienced individuals are invited for the position of Director - Operations, Commercial & Strategy /Professor in Innovative Solutions within BCAST at Brunel University London. The position is permanent, and we offer a competitive salary package, depending on leadership quality, expertise, skills and track record of successful management.

BCAST is a speciality research centre focusing on research on the science and technology of metallic materials with an international reputation. Our research activities span the full range of technology readiness levels, covering fundamental research, technological development, materials development and industrial applications. The successful candidate is expected to support the Director of BCAST to deliver BCAST’s strategic plan for an international centre of excellence for metallurgical research through effective management and efficient running of all aspects of BCAST business. They will lead the development of major initiatives of strategic importance to BCAST, such as marketing the unique expertise and extensive facilities available in the Centre, creating new strategic industrial research partners and developing international collaborations. They will also direct the delivery of all non-academic work output of BCAST at both strategic and operational levels under the authority of the Director of BCAST and in conjunction with the Directors and Heads of University professional service departments. They will be empowered to work independently in undertaking BCAST management issues, liaising with senior staff both within and outside BCAST. This includes responsibility for initiating, developing, implementing and reviewing policies and strategies across the entire BCAST operation and delivering the required level of service in the areas of student/staff welfare, human resources, finance and value for money, academic and industrial collaborations, health and safety, timekeeping, space utilisation, internal control and audit, business continuity, governance, personnel, marketing, estates and other operational matters.

The successful candidate should have a Masters degree or PhD in relevant areas and working experience in an academic environment. Extensive experience and a successful track record at a senior managerial level in a large and complex organisation are essential. It is important that they should have a strong leadership quality and management skills, including the ability to organise, motivate and develop staff. Extensive knowledge of the research and innovation landscape is very desirable. It is also important they should possess excellent inter-personal communication skills (both verbal and written), highly developed negotiating and influencing skills and ability to work in a supportive, collegiate, constructive and diplomatic manner.
