Full Time - 1 FTE split as 0.6 FTE Director role/0.4 FTE Professorial role (Fixed Term for 4 years)

Role Context

The University is seeking to appoint a Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Science and AI (IIDSAI). As Director, the successful candidate will take the lead in developing the Institute’s strategic direction as well as its operational principles. The Director will foster a strong interdisciplinary and collaborative ethos across the different areas of AI at the University, and build strong relationships with researchers across the disciplines. They will act as a champion for the Institute and its work within the University and beyond, interact with a variety of stakeholders, and support early-career and experienced researchers.

The Institute at the University of Birmingham, is a nexus for collaborative interdisciplinary research in all aspects of the AI and data-driven future society and is the University’s base for a number of strategic relationships, including various industry and governmental partners and the Alan Turing Institute, as a Turing University Network member. Working across disciplines and with a range of strategic external partners, the Institute’s acts as a focal point of activity, knowledge exchange and continuous interaction to develop and apply cutting-edge data-driven technologies in important areas including sustainability, well-being, health, and data-driven science. 

Together with the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action, IIDSAI has its home in the recently renovated Elm House, a building fully dedicated to open, inclusive and inspiring research spaces for academics and their collaborators. In addition, the University of Birmingham offers exceptional High Performance Computing facilities, including through the Tier-2 Baskerville system.
