The University of Sunderland offers life-changing opportunities for 25,600 students across its campuses in Sunderland, London, Hong Kong, and through global partnerships with learning institutions in 15 countries. We're proud to be a top 50 UK university (Guardian University Guide 2024), with top-quality facilities, inclusive culture, and our vibrant, ever-changing city.

We are seeking an experienced and creative Director to lead, manage, and develop further the Home Student Recruitment service, supporting the University’s five-year strategic plan and enhancing the University’s profile and reputation among key partners and stakeholders.

About the role

This is an exciting senior leadership opportunity to lead the principal service responsible for achieving home recruitment targets. You will be the principal adviser to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Commercial) and the University Executive on all matters relating to home student recruitment. This includes clearing, scholarships and bursaries and sector consultations and changes.

You will play a critical part in providing leadership, guidance, and support to the Home Student Recruitment teams providing feedback, recognition, and development opportunities. You will also be a member of the University’s Senior Leadership Team – with opportunities to contribute at the corporate level.

This is a rewarding and influential opportunity for a highly motivated individual who wishes to work at a senior leadership level.

What you can bring

As a leader, you will demonstrate significant experience at a senior level, within a student recruitment environment, leading and managing teams with that remit. You will demonstrate an ability to think strategically, be market aware and be able to tilt and pivot your teams to create competitive advantage and be responsive to competitors. You will have an enduring passion and commitment to widening access in all its forms. As a ‘people person’ you will demonstrate your ability to influence, connect with people to strengthen and develop internal and external networks.

What we can offer you

Our university is not just a place of academic excellence, but also a community that embraces inclusivity and support. We value our staff and offer a rewarding package that goes beyond just salary. At the University of Sunderland, we prioritise not only your professional growth but also your happiness and well-being.

We strongly believe that an inclusive university, where a diverse range of individuals feel valued and have equal opportunity to get into work and reach their potential, is good for our staff, students, university, and society. Our work on equality, diversity and inclusivity has never been more important. We believe inclusivity is an essential value at the heart of what we do, and we want all our staff to be part of that journey with us. Our recent staff survey conducted in 2023 showed that 97% of our staff believed that we were committed to achieving an inclusive university.
