The Digital Markets Adviser, Digital Markets Unit contributes to the delivery of the CMA’s work to build and establish the new Digital Markets Unit within the CMA. The role offers substantial opportunities to influence the shape of future regulation of digital markets. 

The new Digital Markets Unit has been established within the CMA to promote greater competition and innovation in digital markets, to the benefit of consumers. Our work focuses on some of the most important digital markets used by consumers and business in the UK, like online search, social media, app stores and online marketplaces. 

This role will focus on leading and contributing to work to prepare for the new regime, including building our evidence of digital markets, horizon scanning, working closely with Government on the legislation, operational readiness, communications and engagement with key stakeholders.  

Your core accountabilities will include:

  • Working as part of a team to develop and deliver work to establish the new DMU as a leading agency worldwide effective in promoting greater competition and innovation in digital markets, in the interests of consumers and citizens.
  • Supporting in delivering case and project work in digital markets, working closely with colleagues across the CMA and using learnings from this work to inform the future work of the DMU.
  • Contributing to building the DMU’s horizon scanning and market insights function, working closely with colleagues in the CMA’s Data and Technology Analytics unit who lead on understanding technologies.
  • Supporting our work to develop the policy, guidance and legislative framework for the new Digital Markets Unit and pro-competition regime, working closely with Government, providing expertise and advice based on the CMA’s knowledge and experience.
  • Working with colleagues from across the CMA to ensure the DMU’s operational readiness to take-on the new pro-competition regime.
  • Working to establish the DMU as a centre of excellence in digital markets, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and building knowledge and expertise.
  • Working with other regulators with responsibilities for digital markets, both domestically and internationally, to strengthen cooperation and deliver a more effective, coherent regulatory landscape. 

We are looking for people with transferable skills and encourage applications from a diverse range of backgrounds. This may include, but is not limited to, people with experience working in digital markets and using data and technology, management and delivery, analytical, research, policy, government, regulatory, economics, or legal experience.  

In any event, your track record will evidence your:

  • Good administrative and organisational skills with experience prioritising your workload to successfully deliver tasks within challenging timescales.
  • Experience building relationships with stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Experience in researching, drawing together and analysing information from a range of sources, with the ability to make recommendations to senior decision-makers to progress work.
  • Demonstrable communication skills (both verbal and written).
