Departmental Lecturer in Japanese

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies aims to appoint a Departmental Lecturer (DL) in Japanese, for one year to cover the teaching and certain other duties of a permanent post-holder during a period of sabbatical leave.  (You must be able to start by 1st January 2025.)

This position is a great opportunity for a suitably qualified and highly effective scholar to develop their career through teaching and research in the field of Classical Japanese language and literature at Oxford.  The successful candidate will also play an active and valued role in the examination and administration of the Faculty’s undergraduate and graduate courses in the area.

You will have completed, or be close to completing a doctorate in Classical Japanese language and literature, and possess a strong command of modern and classical Japanese language.  You will be able to demonstrate an ability to teach on Classical Japanese primary sources and their translation into English, and possess sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge to develop and teach lectures and tutorials on various aspects of the field.  You must have a commitment to communicating and publishing research in your field of study.  Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are also essential, alongside a willingness and ability to undertake administrative tasks.

This position is based in central Oxford.  This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 31 December 2025.
