It is a time of change and opportunity at the University.  This is a great moment to join us in this newly formed post in The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies working directly with academic Heads of Departments, the Department Leadership Teams and the academic Departments.   

The University’s’ Strategy 2030 sets out our bold and inspiring vision to use the power of our education and research, to lead progress towards a sustainable, healthy and socially just future through our people, place and partnerships.  To deliver this strategy, we have evolved our academic and professional services structures.  The Department Manager role is a key part of this evolution and will help to ensure our aim of embedded Professional Services support, which will work directly with academic departments.

This is permanent part-time (0.5 FTE) post is available immediately.  This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on campus and some from home.

The Role

You will work closely with the Head of Department and be the Professional Service lead for the department, coordinating Faculty and University Professional Services in support of the Department’s priorities in research, education and external engagement.   You will work closely with other Department Managers within the Faculty and be part of a wider University Department Manager network.

We are looking for individuals with staff  management experience in large, complex organisations.  You will be an effective decision maker with operational delivery experience.  You will have good project management experience and experience of planning, managing and working with budgets.  The ability to form positive working relationships with a wide range of contacts both externally and internally and to be able to prioritise and communicate objectives will be key in this role.

The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies is one of the foremost academic institutions in the UK offering research and taught degree programmes in a wide range of areas within the field of Arab, Middle Eastern, and Islamic Studies. We offer Arabic and Middle East languages as well as comprehensive education in the literatures and cultures of the Arab world and Middle East, the history, politics, economies, societies, and anthropology of the region and almost every aspect of Islamic studies from medieval to modern Islam.
