Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The University has long recognised the importance of IT as a core component of the day-to-day running of its business. Thanks to a high level of ongoing investment, it can proudly boast some of the latest enterprise scale systems.

We are now looking for a Datacentre Engineer to join our IT Services team. As a Datacentre Engineer you will be jointly responsible for the management of the University’s two primary datacentres along with a number of smaller satellite datacentres. You will be responsible for administering the Data Storage Systems (HPE 3-Par SANs and Scality), Backup/Recovery infrastructure (Veeam) and maintaining the integrity of the user and application data they hold. You will also manage physical server hardware maintenance (HPE), our centralised High-Performance Computing (HPC) service, the datacentres and their supporting infrastructure.

This position has particular responsibility for supporting the Linux and HPC infrastructures, so experience in RedHat Linux would be advantageous. Experience, or an interest in, High Performance Computing would also be beneficial.

This is a key role upon which the effective running of the University’s critical IT service (both administrative and student facing) depends upon. A proportion of this work needs to be done out of hours. Most of this is scheduled but occasionally is required at very short notice in the event of a failure.

This is a particularly exciting time for the Datacentre Group as key services such as a centralised HPC service are being expanded and the adoption and integration of Cloud technologies. This varied and fulfilling role will play an important part in the continued evolution of the University’s IT provision.

The University is focused on an exceptional student experience by providing high quality teaching supported by groundbreaking research, all underpinned by the latest technology. LJMU is an exciting, rewarding, and challenging place to build a career.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction, and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion or belief. All our appointments are made on merit.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
