Innovation for Translation Research Group (ITRG) Upper GI Data Technician

We have an exciting and unique opportunity for a Data Technician to join the Innovation for Translation Research Group (ITRG), University of Southampton. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with data to enable consistent, accurate, timely and secure data acquisition from clinical and basic/translational science sources building upon the existing and highly successful infrastructure in the ITRG.

The maintenance of high-quality linked clinical/pathological data with translational bio-samples underpins the world-leading science of the ITRG. This has delivered >£15M in research funding and practice-changing scientific outputs in top-tier journals. Importantly for our local upper gastrointestinal cancer patients, we have delivered data-driven solutions for accurate prediction of prognosis and real-time outcome monitoring of surgical performance.

Most recently, we have used existing data to train machine learning/AI algorithms to mirror the multidisciplinary team (MDT) process that determines the course of treatment for patients, as a first step to generating an MDT support tool.  This will streamline NHS MDT meetings and allow real-time sense checking of MDT decisions against data-driven best practice.

The successful candidate will work on a collaborative project with colleagues from Portsmouth and Bournemouth Hospitals to integrate new data streams into our existing infrastructure. The candidate will work across clinical and academic boundaries with the help and support of the whole ITRG team.

We are looking for someone with excellent IT/computational skills with experience of working with complex datasets in NHS systems. You will have excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills and experience of working independently to deliver to time and task. We will provide a rich and supportive environment for exciting professional and personal development, and the exceptional candidate with be supported to develop their own academic outputs from this project if they so wish.

Come and join the ITRG and really make a difference!

We are: “Constantly committed to improving the outcomes of patients with solid tumours of unmet clinical need by delivering better, less harmful and more precise treatments, via a combination of clinical and scientific excellence.”

Please note: This is initially an 18 month contract, but may be extended to a maximum of 3 years contingent on funding.
