Cranfield University’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships is creating leaders in technology and management globally. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here .
An exciting opportunity to work as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate has arisen as part of a collaboration project between Siemens Energy Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd and Cranfield University. The project will focus on knowledge and capabilities to develop and maintain an in-house obsolescence management toolkit, for early detection and mitigation of obsolescence risks. This will be used in order to proactively manage our customers' obsolescence risk and to provide services in obsolescence management.
About the Cranfield Manufacturing Theme
Cranfield Manufacturing (which includes major activities in Materials) is following the ambitious strategy of developing a roadmap for a Sustainable Manufacturing Sector for 2050 by applying fundamental science and thought leadership via conceiving and maturing the concepts of Smart, Clean and Green manufacturing solutions agnostically across all sectors and through all tiers of the supply chain with SMEs as well as OEMs. This is to support the national aspiration of Net Zero UK by 2050. We offer world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability. They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and additive manufacturing.
The Centre for Digital Engineering and Manufacturing’s mission is to be a unique postgraduate and research platform for students, staff, business, government and academic partners for learning and research in through-life digital engineering capability in multiscale modelling, life cycle simulations including molecular dynamics to factory/process system simulations, digitalisation of through-life manufacturing, digital twins, artificial intelligence and virtual and augmented reality.
You will be based at Siemens Energy, Lincoln Teal Park site, and within the Siemens Energy team and a team of academics at Cranfield’s Centre for Digital Engineering and Manufacturing (CDEM).
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate which has arisen as part of a collaboration project between Siemens Energy Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd and Cranfield University. The project will focus on knowledge and capabilities to develop and maintain an in-house obsolescence management toolkit, for early detection and mitigation of obsolescence risks. This will be used in order to proactively manage our customers' obsolescence risk and to provide services in obsolescence management.
Your role will lead to the development of a proactive obsolescence management system, addressing servitization, risk management and lifecycle costing. You are expected to work closely with the projects’ partners to familiarise yourself with the current practices and gather relevant data. You are expected to review existing knowledge on obsolescence management and implement novel optimisation, and uncertainty quantification approaches to develop a data architecture to enable proactive obsolescence management requirements. You are also expected to work actively in disseminating the project outcome internally within the industrial platforms, and externally by publishing in high quality journal/conference papers.
About You
This role requires knowledge of obsolescence management and maintenance strategies along with asset life cycle management, cost analysis and supply chain management. Knowledge of servitisation and product-service system concept would also be desirable in this role. This role would suit an individual with excellent mathematical and/or simulation modelling skills and the ability to demonstrate strong oral, visual and written communication skills. Previous experience in asset management or servitization is also essential. You will hold a postgraduate degree (MSc) in data science, business strategy or related area, or preferably, a PhD in one of these areas. You should also have a first degree in data science, engineering, business management, mathematical science, or related discipline, and a developing track record of publishing in high quality journal/conference papers.
In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and to be further trained to be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.
Our Values
Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here . We aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together and realise their full potential.
Diversity and Inclusion
Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups.
To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.
Flexible Working
We are currently piloting hybrid working arrangements until April 2022. This means the majority of our staff are spending between 40% and 60% of their time working from the office where their job roles allow.
We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here .
