Do you have proven experience in managing and developing a team of specialists and providing oversight of Data Protection, Records Management, Freedom of Information, and e-privacy regulation arrangements? The role of Data Protection Officer at the University will help shape the strategy, planning, policies, processes, and improvement initiatives of the University in respect to these areas. This is a senior position within the University and the successful candidate will be a leading part in the Office of Compliance Governance and Legal Services working autonomously and independently in the performance of their duties.

There are big changes happening at the University of East London. 125 years old and committed to driving diversity in the 5.0 talent pipeline, we work in partnership to promote talent wherever it is found and strive to create a balanced, inclusive, and green future. The Data Protection Officer will lead across departmental boundaries to provide assurance over compliance with the university’s legal, regulatory and compliance obligations, and its framework of policies and processes, and will provide specialist advice and support to the Chief Compliance Officer and senior officers of the University, including the Vice-Chancellor & President, Pro-Vice Chancellors, Academic Schools, Professional Services, Governance & Legal Services, as well as managing key external relationships. The appointee will also provide oversight of the university’s insurance activities and will manage the work of the Records Manager.

The successful candidate will hold professional accountability for the University’s strategic approach to data protection across its national and international sphere of academic and business operations and to ensure compliance with respective data protection laws and regulations. In particular, the post holder will maintain compliance by overseeing the development and implementation of a compliance programme which meets the requirements of the European General Data Protection Regulation and the UK Act of Parliament that implements it.

At the University of East London, we aim to attract and retain the best possible staff and offer a working environment at the heart of a dynamic region with excellent transport links. You can look forward to a warm, sincere welcome, genuine camaraderie and mobility in an institution led with passion, visibility, and purpose. Your impact, resilience and sense of collegiality will directly contribute to the University’s future and those of the students whose lives you will touch and change forever. We also offer a great range of benefits including pension, family friendly policies and an on-site nursery and gym at our Docklands Campus. Please see our Benefits Sheet to learn more.
