Digital Services are responsible for the digital information, systems and technologies used by staff and students across The Open University.  Covering all aspects of digital technology at the OU, from sourcing and maintaining systems, through to providing frontline IT support for staff and students.

The role

The effective use of data is key to the successful delivery of the Open University Strategic goals. Reporting to the Digital Integration Hub Senior Data Architect as part of the Chief Data Office this is a key data engineering role appointment to build and run the Data Technology Capability for the Open University. 

The successful candidate will be an expert in data engineering with relevant experience with data engineering tools in Azure, programming languages, technology operations, architectures, integration patterns and how to implement these successfully.

The role will be responsible for technical development in Azure Data platform and writing data pipelines for ingestion of data into a data platform. You will collaborate with other teams across the OU to understand their mid to long-term business objectives and help them to deliver by conducting analyses to support strategic activities across the business as well as designing and developing appropriate internal business solutions.

Although this role is aligned to our Milton Keynes office, we are flexible on location across the UK, with the understanding of occasional ad-hoc attendance onsite.

Skills and experience

  • Do you possess an Undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience, with strong engineering, mathematics or computing elements?
  • Do you have experience of engaging with the business to understand their requirements in order to feed into the design and build of the data model?
  • Do you possess substantial experience of building an Enterprise Data Warehouse with MS Azure?
  • Are you a confident communicator at all levels and do you have experience in managing projects?
  • Are you able to work under pressure to manage competing demands for time and to meet demanding deadlines?
