    Additional Information

    Job Purpose

The Creative Economy Unit (CEU) – now Centre for the Creative Economy - was established in 2014 to create a space for research and engagement projects focused on creative industries policy, collaboration and innovation in Wales and beyond. This move reflected consistent and continuing economic growth in the creative industries and increasing recognition of the creative economy at all levels of government.

Creative Cardiff was launched in October 2015 to create a network connecting creative organisations and freelancers across the full spectrum of the city’s creative economy, from dancers to architects to coders. The network has grown to 4000 creative companies and freelancers, and became the engine room for a series of research projects and policy interventions.

Following the successful development of small grants, commissions and partnerships, the CEU led a successful bid to the AHRC’s Creative Industries Clusters Programme. Clwstwr launched in 2019 and was the largest AHRC award received in Wales (also funded by Welsh Government and worth £9m in total). Clwstwr curated and funded 180 research, development and innovation (R,D&I) projects with creative industry partners and established international partnerships with 5 creative clusters across Europe.

In 2022, the CEU successfully bid for Wave 2 of the UKRI Strength in Places Fund. The successful bid – Media Cymru, a CEU-led Consortium of 23 industry and civic partners to make Wales a global leader in media innovation– brings in £22m from UKRI, £5m from the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) and Welsh Government, with a further £20m in industry match.

The size and scale of activity has meant the CEU has grown to become the Centre for the Creative Economy, and is now in a position to attract significantly more research funding and to confirm its position as one of Europe’s leading creative industries research and innovation centres. The Creative Economy Research Fellow will be based in the Media Cymru Programme while developing collaborations and opportunities across the Centre for the Creative Economy, thereby enhancing Media Cymru’s reach and legacy.

A key objective will be to conduct research that supports, analyses and accelerates future R,D&I activity with the creative industries sector, recognised as growing at twice the rate of the rest of the economy (Creative Industries Council 2021).
