COVID Testing Facility Technician

As we begin to welcome staff and students back to campus, their safety is our utmost concern. We are proud to be able to offer our own onsite asymptomatic testing facility for COVID19 and are now beginning the recruitment to the pivotal roles within this.
We are seeking applications for experienced technicians to undertake the testing and ensure accurate recording of results. The facility is anticipated to have a high throughput and will be supported by qPCR robotics. Full and thorough training will be provided but working in this environment will require focussed, IT confident technician(s) who can efficiently process a large number of tests daily.
This role is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed-term until 30th June 2022.
Salary: £19,612 - £21,814 per annum (Grade 3)

Job Description

Key Duties

∙ Provide a service to staff and students by maintaining, servicing, and repairing materials, machinery and equipment within COVID laboratory testing facility, advising and training staff on the appropriate use of apparatus and equipment using established guidelines.
∙ Prepare all materials and equipment as necessary for delivering testing service ensuring whilst ensuring work area is kept clean and tidy
∙ Undertake stock control, ensuring adequate security and levels of stock are maintained and stock is distributed as required.
∙ Deal with routine enquires from internal and external customers in a professional manner, following established procedures, referring complex enquires to relevant staff members, ensuring all relevant facts and information needed is recorded and passed on
∙ Assist in the maintenance of routine records, updating databases and analysing routine data/information as required
∙ Record the results of experiments in a presentable and user-friendly format and to assist staff in the preparation of technical data/materials for future reference.
∙ Plan and manage specific elements of the testing pipeline ensuring the effective use of resources
∙ Participate actively within the work team, setting an example and showing a flexible approach to delivering team results

Qualifications and Education
1. NVQ 2/GCSE level A-C or equivalent qualification/work related experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2.Experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing laboratory equipment.
3. Experience of working in technical support or equivalent laboratory role.
4. Proficient in the use of appropriate IT packages, including spreadsheet and database packages.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of people.
6. Evidence of working well as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary
7. Ability to deal promptly, effectively and courteously with requests for information or service

Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving
8. Ability to innovate to solve technical problems and responding to queries ensuring compliance with standard procedures and practices.
9. Ability to work on own initiative and unsupervised to deadlines, planning, organising and setting priorities for own work, as well as managing small projects as appropriate

Desirable Criteria

1. A-levels or an equivalent qualification or equivalent work-related experience
2. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
3. Experience working a diagnostic laboratory
4. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
