Applications are invited for a 6 month fixed-term contract to work on the project ‘Pre-symptomatic identification of tip breakdown in UK asparagus’, which will feed into a wider Innovate UK project (‘ Development of a decision support tool to reduce asparagus tip breakdown in the UK’ ) . Tip breakdown is physiological disorder that affects 10% of asparagus production and leads to postharvest food losses. We have secured funding as part of a Innovate UK and BBSRC funded project for the development of innovative decision support tools based on classification models using digital fine phenotyping, cell imaging data, and biochemical (viz., hormones, non-structural carbohydrates) and molecular markers.

The role of the post-holder is to use data-driven approaches for identifying risk factors and developing predictive models to classify asparagus spears that are prone to develop tip breakdown. You will work for JGHC Limited and be helped by Drs Alamar and Simms , from Cranfield University. The project will require experience in the processing of image and laboratory datasets and machine learning alongside good reporting and verbal communiation skills.
