Computational Senior Staff Scientist - Medical & Population Genomics

Updated: about 2 months ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND

We are seeking a highly motivated computational senior staff scientist to join the Martin group at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. The group investigates the genetic basis of rare and common diseases, as well as population genetic processes that influence the distribution of genetic variation. We currently have projects in the following areas, anticipated to expand in the coming years:

  • The role of both rare and common variants in rare disorders, using data from the Deciphering Developmental Disorders study (N=13,000 exome-sequenced patients) and the Genomics England 100,000 Genomes project (N~33,000 whole-genome sequenced rare disease patients)
  • The genetics of cognitive and behavioral traits, using sequence and genotype data from UK Biobank and from two large UK birth cohorts, Born in Bradford and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N~20,000)
  • The genetic basis of complex diseases and traits in British South Asian populations, using data from the Genes & Health project (N>47,000 British Pakistani and Bangladeshi individuals with electronic health record data)
  • The population genetics of South Asia, including the impact of endogamy and consanguinity on disease risk

As a computational senior staff scientist, you will spend about half your time on your own primary project(s), and the rest contributing to other projects in the group and supervising less experienced team members. You will also help shape the strategic direction of the group by conceiving and designing new projects and analysing critical pilot data. There may be an opportunity for direct line-management responsibility in the next few years as the group grows. Prospective candidates are welcome to contact Hilary Martin with informal queries before deciding whether to apply.

Please apply with your CV and a cover letter outlining your suitability for the role using the criteria set out above and in the job description.
