College Lectureship in Pure Mathematics

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 17 Apr 2024

St. John’s College invites applications for a 1.0 FTE fixed-term College Lectureship in Pure Mathematics. The appointment is available for the period 1st October 2024 – 30th September 2025. This is a temporary, fixed-term position and will therefore not be extended or renewed.

The person appointed will teach undergraduates in small groups for up to a maximum of eight hours each week averaged over the three eight-week terms. The teaching will be entirely small groups, most often ‘tutorials’ to groups of two students, and with very occasional classes of around 10 students, and predominately to first- and second-year undergraduates. Tutorials support the lecture courses students take at the Mathematical Institute, which sets problem sheets for the tutorials. The post-holder would be expected to mark students’ problem sheets in advance of tutorials and discuss their work and the course more broadly in the tutorials. The person appointed will be expected to teach tutorials for a number of courses from the first and second year mathematics syllabus; contribute to the preparation of students for University examinations; assist with informal tests and practise examinations set by the College; share administrative and pastoral duties; participate in the undergraduate admissions process; contribute as appropriate to open days, outreach, and access initiatives; as well as pursue their own scholarly work in mathematics.

Details of the undergraduate syllabus in Mathematics can be found at:

https://courses.maths.ox.ac.uk/

Second year courses are called ‘Part A’ and first year courses are called ‘Prelims’.  On the website above, courses are listed by the 8-week Oxford term during which they take place: Michaelmas (Oct – early Dec), Hilary (Jan – Mar), and Trinity (late April – June).  The site normally contains full materials (lecture notes and problem sheets) for each course, and is open for public access.

The salary will be grade 7 point 1 of the University scale, currently £36,024 per annum and is dependent on qualifications and experience. This figure will be adjusted to grade 6.1, currently £32,332 per annum for candidates who do not hold a doctorate.

In addition, the successful candidate will be entitled to research allowances, and dining privileges as outlined in the Further Particulars.  Further particulars for the post, including information about the application procedure, can be found by clicking the apply button above.

This appointment is open to suitably qualified candidates from all backgrounds. The Colleges will especially welcome applications from women and ethnic minorities, who are under-represented among academic staff generally, and from those whose caring or family responsibilities mean that they do not work full-time or mean that they are now returning to work following a career break.  However, all applications will be considered entirely on merit, and with due regard to each candidate’s relevant experience and circumstances.

The appointment will be subject to the provision of proof of the right to work in the UK. Candidates are also asked to complete a Recruitment Monitoring form, if they are willing to do so. This can be submitted via email ([email protected]
