College Lectureship and Fellowship in Law

Updated: 4 months ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 26 Jan 2024

Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for a College Lectureship in Law, associated with a Fellowship of Christ’s College.

The Lectureship will be tenable from 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2027 initially, or for a similar period with dates to be agreed. The Lectureship is a renewable (permanent) post. The postholder will have their first formal appraisal during their third year, potentially resulting in renewal for a further two years. The postholder will have their second formal appraisal at the start of the fifth year, which is the final year of the probationary period. Successful second appraisal will result in completion of the probationary period and renewal until the retirement age.

The successful candidate will be expected to reside in Cambridge and will be elected to a Fellowship of the College.  He or she will be expected to undertake at least eight hours of small-group teaching per week for the College during Full Term (equivalent to 160 hours per academic year), to act as Director of Studies in Law for one or more parts of the Tripos; to engage in research and publication; and to undertake other College offices or duties appropriate to the appointment if asked to do so.  Candidates should normally be able to teach at least three subjects forming part of the Law Tripos at the University of Cambridge. Preference may be given to candidates able to offer teaching in at least two of the following subjects: Land Law, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, Civil (Roman) Law and Constitutional Law. The Fellow may, at their discretion, give additional College teaching (beyond 160 hours per annum) which would be remunerated at the normal hourly rates for College supervision.

The stipend will be equivalent to point 43 of the Cambridge University scale (currently £38,205). The Fellow will be a member of the College’s Governing Body and will be expected to sit on a number of College committees.  The privileges of a Fellowship include seven free meals per week, the possibility of limited financial support for research expenses, a study room for teaching and other academic purposes, and possibly single occupancy residential accommodation in College if required.  The stipend is subject to a reduction if the Fellow chooses to reside in College.

Further particulars are available by clicking the 'Apply' button above. Letters of application (there are no forms) should be sent to [email protected] to arrive no later than noon on Friday 26th January 2024 , including a curriculum vitae with details of qualifications, publications and experience and a research statement; an indication of whether a work visa would be required in order to take up the post; and the names and addresses of two persons who have agreed to act as academic referees.  Candidates must arrange for their referees to send their reference directly to [email protected] so that references are received by the closing date of noon on Friday 26th January 2024.  Short-listed candidates may be asked for copies of written work and may be invited for interviews expected to be held in the week commencing 12th February 2024.
