Co-ordinating Lecturer in Science and Computer Studies - Teaching and Scholarship

The Division of Lifelong Learning invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to organise, manage and develop a high-quality, part-time programme for adult learners in Science and Computer Studies, and to teach on the programme.

Salary: £49,794 - £54,395 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 7).

Job Description

Main Function of Post

To organise, manage and develop a high-quality part-time programme for adult learners within Science and Computer Studies, and to teach on the programme.

Teaching:

  • To organise a balanced programme of courses in terms of content, variety and timing of courses
  • To provide academic leadership and line management for the team of part-time tutors who are the main deliverers of the programme.
  • To implement quality assurance mechanisms that are consistent with University policies and procedures.
  • To independently contribute to module and curriculum development and teaching on the programme, including developing new Pathways and community learning opportunities.
  • To collaborate with colleagues in Lifelong Learning to provide interdisciplinary opportunities for adult learners, including areas related to the environment and sustainability.
  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work.
  • to coordinate the Pathway to Medical Pharmacology and contribute to all Pathways to a Degree in subjects related to Science (including Healthcare).
  • To liaise with other University Schools, partners and providers to develop appropriate opportunities for adult part-time students in terms of course availability, progression routes, as and when appropriate.
Scholarship:
  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work.
  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work.
Other:       
  • To contribute to the promotion of Lifelong Learning, particularly identifying marketing needs and opportunities.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Science, Computing, or a related discipline, or relevant industrial experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Evidence of expertise at Higher Education level in Science (including Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Health Sciences) or Computer Studies or a closely related field with a broad understanding relevant to the current advertised programme relevant to this role.
  • Ability to demonstrate a good understanding of adult learning within Higher Education.
  • Relevant experience of delivering high-quality teaching to adults, preferably in a Higher Education context.
  • Ability to design, and continuously develop modules in Science and Computer Studies.
  • Proven organisational skills, including the ability to exercise judgement.
  • Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
  • Evidence of ability to lead and develop a team of tutors.
