Clinical University Lecturer/Honorary Specialty Dentist in Oral Surgery & Medicine in Relation to Dentistry

The post will be based, in the main, within the Dental School in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, which is part of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences [MVLS] at the University of Glasgow, but there will also be a requirement to work at other sites. The post will be comprised of 6 sessions delivering Oral Surgery teaching, and 2 Sessions delivering teaching of Medicine in Relation to Dentistry, including aspects of Oral Medicine as part of the undergraduate BDS program.

Suitable applicants will hold a registrable dental qualification with the General Dental Council. This post would suit an applicant who is an experienced dental surgeon and has recent experience of providing Oral Surgery procedures within the clinical setting as well as the management of medically compromised patients and who has demonstrable teaching experience. An Honorary clinical contract of appropriate seniority will be arranged by application to the NHS.

Job Purpose

To deliver clinical and academic undergraduate education in Oral Surgery and Medicine in relation to dentistry, including reviewing existing teaching material and supporting the development of innovation in teaching methods.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To play a key role in the delivery of teaching of Oral Surgery and Medicine in Relation to Dentistry (Human Disease), including aspects of Oral Medicine, to undergraduate dental students. On average there are 80-90 undergraduate students a year.

2. To participate in the design and delivery of a range of teaching and assessment activities within Oral Surgery & Medicine in Relation to Dentistry, including aspects of Oral Medicine, within Glasgow Dental Hospital & School for undergraduate students, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This would include delivery of pre-clinical teaching and lectures/tutorials, in addition to clinical supervision and assessment.

3. To participate in the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained and significantly improved.

4. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

5. To provide input in question setting and examination of assessments to include written examinations as well as OSCEs, and Clinical Case Exams.

6. To undertake administrative duties associated with the delivery of undergraduate teaching.

7. To act as a student mentor as part of the Dental School undergraduate mentorship programme.

8. To carry out other duties as assigned by the Head of Dental School and Director of Dental Education.

Glasgow Dental Hospital and School

Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is the main centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health Boards and serves a population of up to 3,000,000. The total number of chairs within the hospital is approximately 160. It is an undergraduate dental teaching school which is consistently rated one of the top schools in the UK and has an adjoining Postgraduate Centre and Primary Care Out of Hours treatment clinic. There are strong links between the NHS Dental Hospital, other hospitals in the region and the University of Glasgow. It has an excellent library with on-line literature search facilities. Glasgow Dental Hospital and School comprises the following clinical departments: Restorative Dentistry (fixed and removable prosthodontics; endodontics; periodontology), Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Paediatric Dentistry,

Orthodontics, Dental Radiology.

The Oral Surgery / Oral Medicine Departments

The Oral Surgery & Oral Medicine Departments have recently undergone extensive redesign and refurbishment and provide excellent facilities for outpatient oral surgery and oral medicine care. The clinical areas within the departments provide out-patient clinics (12 chairs), a Minor Oral Surgery facility for the management of emergency patients, student teaching and some minor oral surgery procedures such as biopsies (5 chairs) and a surgical facility for minor oral surgery with and without sedation, this incorporates    theatre-type facilities and a large recovery area. All aspects of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine are undertaken including implantology, bone grafting and a facial pain service. Our services are supported by new and state of the art services in oral microbiology and pathology and by our radiology service, with both ultrasound and CBCT available on  site

We have a close and multidisciplinary approach to patient care both with other specialities within GDH, as well as the Public Dental Service and other medical specialities within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience 

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1 BDS or equivalent dental qualification which is registrable with the General Dental Council. The appointee must be fully registered with the GDC by the time of post commencement.

A2 Be eligible to work in the UK.

A3 Possess or be willing to undertake a postgraduate certificate in academic practice or similar postgraduate teaching qualification.

Desirable

B1 Possession of MFDS/MFD/ MJDF or equivalent from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges or other postgraduate dental qualification.

B2 Possess a higher degree or be in the process of writing up.

Experience

Essential

C1 Minimum of 4 years post Qualification.

C2 Extensive recent diagnostic and surgical experience in all aspects of Oral Surgery and the ability to undertake clinical practice in Oral Surgery as part of the Oral Surgery team.

C3 Extensive experience of managing medically compromised dental patients in outpatient and in-patient settings with the need to be familiar with the common primary care medical problems and their management, also the common medical emergencies and their management.

C4 Experience of delivery of Undergraduate (or Postgraduate) Teaching and Assessment within Oral Surgery.

C5 Ability to deliver Evidence-based teaching.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Speciality Doctor Pay Scale £58,198 - £90,688 per annum pro rata

An honorary clinic contract of appropriate seniority will be arranged by application to the NHS.

This post is part time, 32 hours per week and open ended.
