Clinical Skills and Simulation Teacher (2 Posts)

We are recruiting two Clinical Skills and Simulation Teachers to undertake research-informed teaching (and activities relating to teaching) focussing on the development and delivery of clinical skills and simulation-based education for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the School of Healthcare Sciences.  

The successful candidates will be supporting learning and assessments across the School, including the Caerleon Clinical Simulation Centre and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students and to carry out academic administrative duties within the programmes as required. 

We are looking for dynamic and forward thinking candidates with clinical expertise to join our clinical skills and simulation team and make a significant contribution to the ongoing development and delivery of high quality clinical skills education and immersive, interprofessional simulation.  Successful candidates would be expected to work independently and as a team member within an evolving clinical skills and simulation team and wider academic teams.

These posts are full-time, 35 hours per week and open-ended

Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6).

Job Description

Main Duties & Responsibilities

•    To design and deliver a wide range of clinical/practical skills sessions, including mandatory training, across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes inclusive but not limited to lectures, seminars, simulated sessions and tutorials.
•    To co-ordinate, plan and manage clinical/practical skills related teaching activities, working closely with Professional Services colleagues.
•    To develop and facilitate high quality, immersive uniprofessional and interprofessional simulation based education using a range of different modalities with a blended learning approach.
•    To support and supervise learning and assessment of students in simulated learning environments, including participation in OSCEs and practical assessments as required.
•    To contribute to the ongoing development of the simulated learning environments in supporting learning and assessment activity (i.e. simulated practice hours/placements) which meet the needs of learners and future healthcare workforce.
•    To be responsible for teaching and administrative activities, including preparing learning and assessment materials (i.e. e-learning) ensuring content is current, and accessible from the virtual learning environment (VLE), preparing service users and simulated patients.
•    To be responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of mandatory training - manual handling, basic life support and Acute Life-Threatening Events Recognition and Treatment (ALERT) training to undergraduate students.
•    To deliver staff update sessions for mandatory training/clinical/practical skills.
•    To coordinate, update and regularly meet with Basic Life Support trainers and Diligent manual handling trainers across the School.
•    To work with, and support, academic teams contributing to module design, assessment procedures, accreditation of courses and quality control processes in relation to clinical/practical skills and simulation-based education.
•    To support evaluation of clinical/practical skills and simulation based activities, including facilitating student feedback,  To act on evaluation and feedback received to enhance the quality of sessions, and implement ideas for improving own performance.
•    Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world, including participation in Open Days
•    To provide pastoral support for students, and refer to onwards within the School as appropriate.

Scholarship
•    Contribute to scholarship and research in the area of Higher Education through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
•    Any other duties commensurate with the grade.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1.    Degree level qualification in a healthcare discipline, together with relevant clinical experience (a minimum of 3 years’ post qualification)
2.    Current Healthcare Registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), and evidence of continual professional development

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3.    Hold the All-Wales Manual Handling Training Passport and Information Scheme or an equivalent qualification, together with an Intermediate Life Support qualifications
4.    Proven ability to deliver education and training (to include seminars, tutorials, small group work etc.).
5.    Demonstrable specialist knowledge of clinical and/or professional skills, including knowledge of health and safety requirements for clinical skills teaching.
6.    Proven ability to analyse complex information and summarise appropriately.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
7.    Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including experience of presenting to various audiences
8.    Ability to work on own initiative, planning and setting priorities particularly with regard to teaching sessions.
9.    Ability to undertake appropriate academic administrative tasks associated with the programmes of study.

Other
10.    Evidence of positively contributing within a team working environment.

Desirable Criteria

1.    Hold an Advanced Life Support or ALERT qualification.
2.    Hold, or be working towards, an approved teaching qualification, such as the Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent.
3.    Have experience of teaching or working within a healthcare environment, to include experience in designing, developing and delivering teaching materials and a willingness to take responsibility for related administration.
