Job Description

The post is to build senior capacity for research and education within the Department of Women & Children’s Health in the School of Life Course & Population Health Sciences and the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.   

The postholder will have a background in one of the department’s strategic research areas: child health services and systems research, population paediatrics and policy, general, community, or integrated child health, inequalities, or other child health problems, and be expected to realise the potential for integrated research activity across the wider School. 

The postholder will have an excellent track record in research; a proven ability to attract external funding to support their research programme, and a strong record of publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. The post is primarily a career research-focussed post, for clinical-academics, but the postholder will undertake some leadership within the MSc in Women & Children’s Health (e.g. module leadership, teaching, assessment and administration) and contribute to other relevant teaching within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine.  Experience of research supervision and teaching at a relevant level (e.g. BSc/MBBS or MSc teaching) and in Children’s Health is therefore essential. 

The post will be predominantly based at the St Thomas Campus sites, Evelina London at St Thomas’ Hospital and KCL’s Guy’s Campus. 

This post will be offered on an fixed term contract for 3 years.

This is a full-time post, but part-time will be considered.


Key Responsibilities
  • Establish a successful research group in Child Health.
  • Publish high impact research that contributes to the discipline and the Faculty’s research record.
  • Apply for and secure peer-review research funding and PhD studentships.
  • Develop and strengthen links with other academics at King’s and externally to promote research and secure additional funding.
  • Take a leadership role in Clinical Academia, contributing to the development of stronger links between King’s and Evelina London.
  • Take a leadership role and deliver relevant teaching and tutorials, i.e. lead a module in the MSc in Women & Children’s Health or equivalent; contribute to BSc and MBBS teaching.
  • Supervise and train undergraduate and postgraduate research students as required.
  • Act as a personal tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate students as required.
  • Carry out teaching and research administrative duties as required and represent the Department on School, Faculty and University Committees as required.
  • Undertake appropriate professional duties, such as serving on the scientific committees of conferences, editorial boards of journals, grant funding committees, and involvement in professional bodies.
  • Be collegiate, positively promote a positive research college, embed EDI in all activities and undertake public engagement/outreach.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • MBBS and GMC registered
  • PhD in Paediatrics, Child Health, health services research, epidemiology, population health, public health, health systems, or related area, or with extensive equivalent research experience.
  • Proven experience of teaching subject(s) related to Women’s Health and/or Children’s Health and related sciences to undergraduates/postgraduates.
  • Evidence of ability to write competitive, peer-reviewed grant applications.
  • Publication of high impact research papers
  • Knowledge and practical skills in an area of research relevant to the Dept. of Women and Children’s Health
  • Supervisory/leadership experience in an area of research relevant to the Dept. of Women and Children’s Health.
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team and to share and encourage good teaching and research practice
  • Evidence of actively promoting a positive research culture
  • Committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, actively addressing areas of potential bias.

    • Desirable criteria

  • University teaching qualification.
  • Evidence of external recognition of expertise (e.g. grant/paper reviewing, invitation to speak at conferences).
  • Mentoring of junior staff in early career development.
  • Experience of university administrative duties.
