Job Purpose

This is a fixed term (3 years) Clinical Research Fellowship tenable in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health. The post is funded 50% by University of Glasgow & 50% by NHS R&D. An honorary clinical contract will be required and applied for on appointment to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and/or other Health Boards as appropriate.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting recruitment to clinical studies and data collection.
  • 2. Supporting project management and study coordination in specified projects.

    3. Analysis of data as directed and supervised by the principal investigators.

    4. Supporting source data collection across sites.

    5. Supporting the Chief Investigator with communication to collaborators, stakeholders, including patients and their carers/relative

    6. Supporting trial management and compliance with Good Clinical Practice

    7. Supporting outputs of the research including abstracts and scientific papers. The research activity and data collected will support a Higher Degree.

    8. Responsible for presenting at dissemination events including collaboration meetings and scientific symposia related to the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health.

    9. Support clinical and translational research in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, as appropriate

    10. The Fellow will be expected to register for a higher degree (e.g., MD or PhD) and the work is expected to contribute to the basis for submission of a higher degree. Training in relevant methodologies (e.g., Good Clinical Practice, MRI, ECG, molecular techniques) will be undertaken and certification maintained throughout the fellowship.

    11. Support for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the School may be required but will not form a major component of the post.

    12. The Fellow will support administrative activities associated with the project(s).

    13. 50% of this position will support Clinical activities at the Clinical Research Facility at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in a specialty related to research in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health (e.g. cardiology, renal medicine, clinical pharmacology, chemical pathology, diabetes and endocrinology).

    14. The Fellow will be expected to submit grant application(s) as appropriate to the needs of the project.

    15. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

    Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

    Knowledge/Qualifications

    Essential:

    A1. MBChB or equivalent 

    A2. MRCP (UK) or equivalent.

    A3. Completed general professional training in general medicine.
    A4. Full registration with General Medical Council & Licence to Practise

    Desirable:

    B1. BSc or equivalent intercalated degree in medicine or related subject

    Skills & Experience

    Essential:

    C1. Experience in a clinical area related to research in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health (e.g. cardiology, renal medicine, clinical pharmacology, chemical pathology, diabetes and endocrinology, at least ST3).

    C2. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently. 

    C3. Good organisational and IT skills.
    C4. Ability to manage research projects. 

    C5. Ability to work towards School objectives. 

    C6. Excellent communication skills (patients, research staff, line manager). 

    C7. Evidence of distinction in career to date e.g., prizes, awards, bursaries.
    C8. Strong interpersonal skills, ability to get on well with colleagues but also strong ambitions in the field.

    Desirable:

    D1. Evidence of publication or experience in writing 

    D2. Previous involvement in clinical studies and/or preclinical translational research projects including courses relevant to clinical and translational research. 

    D3. Capacity for originality and innovation.

    Job Features

    The Fellow will be joining a clinical research team within the School and perform 50% of their duties under the auspices of the University of Glasgow. The other 50% of the post will be funded by NHS R&D and require the post holder to delivery both commercial and non-commercial clinical research in the field of cardiovascular and metabolic health within the Glasgow CRF. It is envisaged that the 3-year post would attract existing trainees in wishing experience in clinical research and working towards a higher degree (MD or PhD). It will allow for around 5 sessions (20 hours) per week of research activities within the CRF (worked flexibly), which will include time allocated for course work and training. The remainder of the post will include a limited amount of clinical sessions in the candidate’s clinical specialty.

    The Graduate School of the School of Medicine supports all aspects of postgraduate training and development. It is expected that the Fellow will register for a higher degree and that the work will provide material sufficient to submit an MD or PhD. Postgraduate students undertaking higher degrees are required to participate in the Research Training Programme in generic and transferable skills coordinated by the Graduate School.     In addition to a Supervisor and Co-supervisor, all postgraduate students will have an academic advisor appointed to provide mentoring. Progress will be reviewed annually.

    Terms and Conditions

    Salary will be on the Clinical Research Fellow grade, £38,704 - £57,349 per annum.

    This post is full-time and fixed term for 3 years.

    Probationary Period

    All members of staff are contracted to a 6 month notice period.

    Members of staff are normally eligible to contribute to the Universities' Superannuation Scheme (USS) and on appointment shall be deemed to be in membership of the scheme and contributions deducted accordingly, unless the University is advised in writing prior to the commencement of employment of a wish not to join.” Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
