We have exciting opportunities for Clinical Lecturers in Surgery in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. This is a fixed term (up to 6 years or up until six months after obtaining CCT, whichever is soonest).

You will have completed general professional training and have obtained a National Training Number in Surgery. Furthermore, you should have completed or near completed a PhD degree in Surgery. The successful candidate will train in the West of Scotland Higher Specialty Training Programme in Surgery.

The post will be within the School of Medicine in the College of MVLS, and associated Teaching Hospitals of the University of Glasgow, and other units/departments in the region as recommended by the Training Programme Director and the Training Committee.

Clinical training will be a major (80%) focus of the Lectureship to ensure the appointee can successfully complete their CCT. You will participate in an area of research in collaboration with one of the leading research groups in Surgery and related disciplines, in basic, clinical and translational science, within the College of MVLS.

Job Purpose

The aim is to train clinical academic surgeons to become independent researchers, competitive for independently funded intermediate and senior clinical research fellowships, and for senior academic posts in Surgical disciplines.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will have an established interest in research with a record of achievement in an area cognate with the existing interests in the College of MVLS (including the SOM and Research Institutes). The appointee will be expected to;

Develop a programme of research under the supervision of an established PI, in a subject area, in basic, translational or clinical science related to ongoing research in the Dept. Surgery.

Plan, design and implement projects with collaborators as appropriate; and to contribute to and submit grant applications and publications in high quality journals.

Contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of research facilities There are extensive laboratory and clinical facilities for research within the College of MVLS, and its related Schools and Institutes.

Teaching

It is expected that the Lecturer will take part in the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities.  These will include;

Teaching of clinical skills and other vocational training activities, including seminars and tutorials.

Lecturers may also contribute to postgraduate taught courses within the College of MVLS. The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing teaching commitment within the Unit.

Administrative Duties

The Lecturer will assist in planning and conduct of student teaching and the training of junior medical staff.

Clinical Duties

The Lecturer will be expected to undertake clinical duties within Surgery within Glasgow and other West of Scotland hospitals, as coordinated by Training Programme Directors in consultation with Academic Supervisor.  Day to day supervision of the clinical activity of the Lecturer will be carried out by the senior academic staff.  Responsibilities, including on call duties and specialty training will be arranged as necessary depending on the appointee's current training and needs in conjunction with the Clinical Director for Surgery.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1. MBChB or equivalent and full registration with General Medical Council.

A2. MRCS /FRCS.

A3. A national training number (NTN)

A4. PhD in Surgery.

Desirable:

B1. Established Research Programme related to ongoing research in the Dept.Surgery.

B2. Publication and presentation at national meetings.

Experience/Training

Essential:

C1. In ST training programme.

C2. Experience of research relevant to Surgery.

C3. Evidence to suggest adequate exposure to academic medicine to justify a career choice.

C4. Experience and aptitude for surgery.

C5. An interest in teaching and learning in medicine.

Desirable:

D1. Evidence of basic science research experience.

D2. Previous involvement in clinical trials.

D3. High Impact publication record.

Special Aptitudes and Ability

Essential:

E1. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently.

E2. Good organisational and IT skills.

E3. Ability to manage research projects.

E4. Ability to work towards College objectives.

Desirable:

F1. Excellent communication skills (patients, clinical trial co-ordinators, research staff, line manager).

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Clinical Academic scale £43,504 - £64,461 per annum.

The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 6 years.
