Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry

Updated: 4 months ago
Location: Glasgow, SCOTLAND
Deadline: 02 Jan 2024

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry in the School of Health & Wellbeing. This is a fixed term (up to 6 years or up until six months after obtaining CCT, whichever is soonest). You will hold a MRCPsych (UK) or equivalent and will have completed general professional training in Psychiatry. You may already hold a higher research degree (MD/PhD). If you do not possess a higher degree, you will be supported in developing an appropriate project, pursuing any necessary funding, and executing research suitable for submission of a post-graduate degree. You may be appointed without a higher research degree, although progression would be dependent upon you successfully pursuing this qualification in the first year of the post.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the level of Specialist/Specialty Registrar and will enter the West of Scotland Higher Specialty Training Programme in Psychiatry. You must already have a national training number at the time of taking up the post.

The post will be based within Mental Health and Wellbeing within the new School of Health and Wellbeing (SHW) Clarice Pears building. For training and research purposes rotation to other clinical units or departments may be required. Clinical training in psychiatry will be a major focus of the Lectureship in order to ensure you can successfully complete your CCT.

Job Purpose

The academic aim of the Lectureship would be to allow research development to support intermediate fellowship applications by the end of the lectureship and eventual growth to an independent academic career.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research

The appointee will have an established interest in research, with a record of achievement in an area related to the existing interests within Mental Health and Wellbeing (such as suicide prevention, trauma-associated disorders, complex interventions, epidemiology, clinical neuroscience, psychosis, and recovery) and will be expected to make a contribution to the research and teaching work of the School of Health and Wellbeing.  The appointee will be expected to develop a programme of research under the supervision of an established research/teaching leader within the school, with the intention of completing a higher degree and developing an academic career.  There are extensive laboratory and clinical facilities for research, as well as access to large datasets, within the school and fruitful collaborations with other Schools in the College of MVLS, and related Schools within the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will be expected to have already or to register for a higher degree (MD/PhD).

Teaching

While the main focus of the applicant is research, teaching will represent an important component of the post. It is expected that the Lecturer will contribute to delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities which could include contributing to design and delivery of the current intercalated psychological medicine degree programme, student selected components (SSCs) in psychiatry, exam question design, marking and participation in OSCEs.

Administrative Duties

There are no official administrative duties written into this post, however the successful appointee may be asked to take on a role of responsibility within the Section.

Clinical Duties

The successful appointee will join the relevant Psychiatry rotation in Scotland. To allow an on-going 40% research commitment, as many parts of the rotation as possible will be organised to be completed in Glasgow. However, there are fixed components of the training that cannot be completed on site and this should be understood by the appointee and by those involved in training. The purpose of a Clinical Lectureship is to ensure that candidates acquire a CCT, and appropriate clinical training opportunities will be arranged to ensure that this can occur within the duration of the Lectureship. Responsibilities, including on call duties and specialty training will be arranged as necessary depending on the appointee's current training and needs in conjunction with the Training Programme Director and local clinical and educational supervisors.

Clinical academic training will be the focus of the post with a 60:40 split between clinical and academic activity. The allocation of research and clinical time is flexible and various patterns of working are possible to suit differing research and clinical requirements e.g. it may also be possible to organise research blocks of several weeks or months at a time.  Applications will be welcome from trainees who are working less than full time, and the job plan will be adapted to suit such trainees.
