The facility for the Manufacturing of Active Implants and Surgical Instruments (MAISI) is located in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences. MAISI will be a dedicated sub-contract manufacturing facility, fully staffed and equipped to build advanced active implantable medical devices and surgical instruments for first-in-patient clinical studies. The facility shall enable funded research to achieve its full impact by supplying prototypes for clinical evaluation, accelerating the translation pathway for the future benefit of patients. About the role

We are seeking a Cleanroom Manufacturing Technician to join our team manufacturing novel medical devices.

This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive person to help us in establishing a new facility for the production of first-in-human medical devices. The facility (MAISI) will support the production of active implantable medical devices and multi-modal surgical instruments.

Working with the project team, the post holder will be oriented by the Senior Process Engineer and will, during the first year, support the qualification and validation of the process equipment. During this period the candidate will be trained in Good Manufacturing Practice and receive specialised training to operate state-of-the-art equipment.

After the first year, the Cleanroom Manufacturing Technician will be a fundamental person in the manufacturing activities and will bring their expertise to improve the processes.

The job requires a perfectionist who has an innate need to get things right; the person fulfilling this position should have the ability to work in a steady, thorough and deliberate manner and have the persistence necessary to see a job through to conclusion.

The post holder will be employed within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King’s College London. The successful applicant will be based on the St. Thomas’ Hospital campus and will work inside a controlled environment (Clean Room). 

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 5th February 2026.


Key Responsibilities
  • The Cleanroom Manufacturing Technician will work in a clean room environment maintaining equipment such as furnaces, micro-machining and micro-assembling equipment, assisting with cleaning and replacing parts during routine operation and servicing.
  • Following the related work instructions to operate the equipment/ processes; the Clean Room Technician will be assisted by the Process Engineering team when needed to guarantee the correct execution of the tasks.
  • Performing specific quality tests with specialised equipment.
  • Promote quality to avoid repeating errors.
  • Adopt a consistent approach to tackling a task, creating sound practical procedures incorporating checks for accuracy and ensuring that tasks are completed satisfactorily.
  • Behave according to clean room procedures that align with current GMP practices.
  • Supervising of third-party suppliers for preventive maintenance, calibration and re-qualification.
  • Report all non-conformances and collaborate on the root cause analysis.
  • Use judgement in problem-solving.
  • Keep information of a confidential nature strictly confidential and never disclose it either inside or outside work.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s A*-C or equivalent including English, Mathematics and Science.
  • Understand technical drawings (electro-mechanical or related).
  • Capable of working to strict standard operating procedures.
  • Excellent hand-to-eye co-ordination.
  • High degree of accuracy and precision with excellent attention to detail with a high level of concentration and focus.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Technical skills around the execution and reporting of experimental studies and protocols.
  • Desirable criteria

  • A Level equivalent, apprenticeship or higher education in Mathematics or Science fields.
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory or clean-room environment.
  • Previous experience in assembling/servicing high grade products (micro-electronics, jewelry or watchmaking).
  • Previous experience in operating micro-machining equipment (laser, EDM, micro welding).
  • Awareness of medical device regulation and quality system standards e.g. ISO13485, 21 CFR 820, AIMD, MDD and MDR
