Join a pioneering team pushing forward the frontiers of space engineering and science at Surrey Space Centre (SSC). The £16.5bn government initiative aims to build one of the most innovative and attractive space economies in the world, leveraging world-leading science and technology expertise, a strong talent pipeline, at the forefront of satellite manufacturing and operations capabilities.

We are looking to recruit a Chief Engineer to work directly with the SSC Director and academics to develop instruments and equipment for flight in space and the upper atmosphere, as well as for ground-based experiments.

  • Supervising and carrying out detailed coding for instruments and equipment.

Established in 1979, SSC is an internationally acclaimed centre of excellence in space engineering and science, which enjoys an outstanding reputation for the quality of its research and teaching and has strong links with the space industry. SSC has an extensive range of space test and experimental facilities including a satellite ground station and operations centre; large cleanroom; thermal, vacuum, vibration, radiation and shock environmental test facilities, large granite tables for zero-friction experiments, propulsion laboratory; solar simulation facility and prototyping maker-spaces.

We are currently benefiting from a new £800K investment jointly by the University of Surrey and the UK Space Agency to boost academic-industry collaboration and improve UK space skills: this initiative will also significantly develop the Centre’s facilities and capabilities.

We are looking for;

  • Substantial knowledge and experience in development of space instruments and equipment.
  • High level of expertise and experience in analogue and digital electronics design, build and test (including advanced PCBs).
  • Qualifications and experience in build, fabrication and inspection of electrical subassemblies to recognised space industry standards (such as ECSS).
  • Significant experience in coding for embedded computers.
  • Knowledge and experience in space product assurance and quality for instruments and equipment.
