Overall Purpose:

The Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) is a world-class research institute with the mission to deliver transdisciplinary team science that brings together basic and clinician scientists to advance the understanding of biology and its application to medicine. Funded by the MRC as part of UK Research and Innovation , the LMS has a collaborative and inclusive working culture. The LMS is based in a recently opened state-of-the-art building designed for team science located in the heart of West London on the Imperial College London Hammersmith Campus, in close proximity to the Imperial Clinical Research Facility, Hammersmith Hospital and the Imperial College London White City Innovation Campus.

A strategic priority for the LMS Director, Professor Wiebke Arlt, is to support and develop outstanding clinician scientists who work in the overlap area of fundamental discovery science and early experimental medicine and form an integral part of advancing transdisciplinary team science. Since 2009, the LMS has been home to the Chain–Florey Clinician Scientist Training Programme, which provides clinicians with the opportunity to undertake discovery research in the outstanding laboratories of the LMS. We have recently redesigned this programme to represent an integrated clinician scientist training pathway that addresses all the gaps and cliff edges that lead to the current significant attrition amongst clinically qualified researchers in training, with 25% of the UK clinician scientist workforce lost over the last 10 years. We aim to further develop the Chain–Florey Clinician Scientist Training Programme to provide a wide range of funding supporting the career development of clinician scientists and to build a training and mentoring programme that ensures that they can flourish in their dual career as a clinicians and scientists.  Going forward, we also aim to develop outreach opportunities for UK clinician scientists in training outside London and provide access to support, collaboration and mentorship.

The role of Chain–Florey Clinician Scientist Training Programme Manager is key to the delivery of the the newly enhanced and integrated programme, and its growth as a national training beacon for clinical researchers. Thus, we are looking for a highly motivated individual that feels passionately about improving career development opportunities and support for young clinicians at a time of intense demands placed on them by several stakeholders.

Main duties:

The Chain–Florey Clinician Scientist Training Programme Manager will manage the programme, which provides several integrated opportunities for clinician scientist training, from pre-doctoral training through to the transition to becoming a clinical research group leader. These include:

  • Clinical Research Training Fellowships
  • Clinical Post-doctoral Research Fellowships and Clinical Lectureships
  • Transition-to-Independence Fellowships for clinician scientists who just completed or are about to complete their clinical training

Across all of these opportunities, the Chain–Florey Clinician Scientist Training Programme Manager will work with the Institute Director, Professor Wiebke Arlt, and the LMS Clinician Scientist Training Lead, Professor Dominic Withers, to develop successful recruitment campaigns, mentorship schemes and a bespoke training programme for clinician scientists, as well as oversee their successful completion including annual retreats and mentorship support.
