The Catering and Events Department of the Campus Services Division at Imperial College London operates various cafés and restaurants located within the South Kensington, Charing Cross, Hammersmith and White City Campuses. The department aims to provide affordable and high-quality food and services for the Imperial College community.

The role involves a multi-skilled approach to assist in the serving of food and beverages within the College’s catering outlets, bars and retail outlets, collect payment for such services, conduct cleaning and stock control duties.

Adhere to all legislation and policies for licensing laws, health, safety and hygiene.

To assist the Events and Catering Supervisors in the operational delivery of catering, taking responsibility for the preparation and service of catered events, to clear rooms of delivered catering, collect and record customer consumption and feedback, to ensure all catering requirements are met and to take operational responsibility for the provision of customer requirements.

To actively participate, as part of your role and when directed to do so, in other operational duties required across the Campus Services Division and the wider College.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Effectively take payments in accordance with the College’s Cash Handling Guidelines and College’s Financial Regulations

  • Carry out basic food preparation and beverage preparation, basic cooking and food assembly duties and serve in line with service standards

  • Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with both Imperial College’s and statutory Food Hygiene/Health & Safety policies

  • Store and restock foodstuffs to maintain an adequate service

  • To lay up and clear dining furniture and counters, as well as utensils

  • To report any failure of service, defects, repairs and maintenance issues to the Supervisor and dispose of all waste in the correct way

  • To brief and coordinate all agency staff to deliver a professional and efficient service

  • Assist in identifying areas where improvements can be made and helping to implement solutions

  • Excellent communication skills, offering customer friendly service and to be courteous, efficient, respectful and welcoming to all customers

  • To work flexibly in accordance with the operational needs of the department

  • Within the scope of responsibility and knowledge of the post holder, to attempt to rectify any customer complaints by referring to the Supervisor on any action taken, or alerting him/her to action taken


Essential requirements

  • A basic food hygiene qualification proven by the attainment of a basic Food Hygiene Certificate within two months of appointment

  • A real passion for customer service

  • A good command of verbal English proven by the attainment of a basic level English language course, in order to be able to understand basic instruction and communicate effectively with customers, including staff, students and visitors

  • Responsible attitude towards health and safety at work

  • A good understanding of the use of different equipment/machinery within the work area and the ability to operate such equipment/machinery

  • Flexible and adaptable to work at any College location

  • A genuine interest in the catering industry

Salary - £22,610 (pro rata for Term Time and Part Time appointments)

Operational Services, Grade 1a

Full Time, Permanent 37 hours per week and Term Time 20, 30 and 37 weekly hours x 8 Posts

The standard working week is 5 days out of 7, daily rota, including working evenings and weekends
