Applications are invited for the position of Business Manager.

The position will be located in the Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton General Hospital.  The Centre is a newly constructed dedicated research building that was the result of a significant fund-raising campaign. The Centre builds on a 40 year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton. The Centre is the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in the UK that brings the whole research pipeline under one roof: from pioneering discovery science to applied research and preclinical modelling and crucially onto first-in-human clinical trials and beyond.  The Centre is home to world-class research facilities, which includes not only state of the art scientific laboratories but also a Clinical Trials Unit.

This position is one of at least 50 new research and other staff who will work together with the existing investigators to build on the exciting progress already made in the field of cancer immunology.

The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Ward and Ober who are relocating their research group from the USA to Southampton. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the development of novel antibody based therapeutics that in the past has led to several new therapeutics that are currently in advanced clinical trials. The group also develops advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their research is supported by major grants from the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies.

The post-holder will be highly motivated and will be excited by the challenges to support a dynamic group of researchers with managerial and support roles. These involve management and independent execution of the interactions with stakeholders both within and outside the university, such as grant giving bodies. Managing the organizational aspects of the research group will be the focus of the position, which will include, event organization, diary and travel management, pre and post grant administration, human resource and space management and preparation of reports.

While direct experience of the role described in the job description is not a prerequisite, administrative or scientific experience are highly desirable.

You will possess relevant academic qualifications and work experience. You will also have good IT skills, the ability to plan and organise your own workload, use your initiative, work well under pressure, and communicate effectively and professionally with a range of stakeholders across the organisation and outside.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor E. Sally Ward, [email protected] or Professor Raimund J. Ober, [email protected]
