Role Summary

The role of Business Engagement Partner requires an enthusiasm for people, the skill to interact with high-level corporate professionals and academics, experience of delivering against KPIs and KPTs, along with the ability to passionately translate complex information into a compelling case for support in both verbal and written form.

We are seeking interest from individuals who have business development experience of working in large complex organisations. Your experience does not need to be sector specific however an understanding of the following sectors would be advantageous: Energy, Mobility and Resource Efficiency.

Working to individual, team and institutional key performance indicators, alongside a central team of Business Engagement Partners, the role will identify internal opportunities and match these to potential corporate partners. The post holder will be expected to develop excellent relationships with existing and potential supporters, which will culminate in a corporate or strategic partnership, and be committed to the vision of the University.

You will be aligned to the Birmingham Energy Institute in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences working closely with the Director and Deputy Director. More broadly, you will help to further enhance the strong strategic relationships that the Birmingham Energy Institute has with partners such as Tyseley Energy Park. 

Within the College the role is aligned to the Research & Knowledge Transfer Executive, a team that spans research strategy and funding application development. The role works closely with key members of the College leadership team to grow research funding from industry partners and enhance research impact, while developing significant relationships with industry partners and other stakeholders in line with the College’s strategic research themes.

The role works closely with the College Research Development Manager to identify and develop opportunities for industry support for large strategic research and relationships with major research funders.

Person Specification

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus extensive relevant practical experience – where no equivalent qualification is held substantial practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
  • Experience of planning and organising a comprehensive pipeline of opportunities for collaboration with industry to meet stretching targets for project delivery.
  • Ability to balance the reactive and proactive aspects of the role, generating own work but also responding the requests from the Strategic Business Engagement Partner and external business partners.
  • Have an understanding of the different drivers for business and academic stakeholders and how they can be brought together successfully.
  • Proven business development/sales skills and client relationship management experience.
