Job Purpose

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Business Development Manager in the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics (RCB).  The Business Development Manager will lead on business development, improvement and marketing requirements, identifying and pursuing new opportunities and building effective communications, relationships and processes that will ensure that RCB remains internationally competitive and financially sustainable.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Projects and Quality, the Director of Operations and the Director of RCB, as well as other senior Centre staff, to drive forward RCB’s pivotal role at the centre of clinical trials activity in the University of Glasgow and as a cornerstone of the Glasgow CTU.  They will promote effective collaborative relationships with stakeholders at local, national and international level, providing high level input to the current operation and future shape of the Robertson Centre.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.Work with a diverse range of internal/external stakeholder groups to facilitate open discussion to identify and articulate stakeholder needs and translate these into engagement proposals and deliverables to build and strengthen new and existing relationships.

2. Develop a strong understanding of the services provided by the Centre and how they fit within the University, regional, national and international landscapes in relation to clinical trials and health research data.  Use this understanding to drive forward engagement and to identify new opportunities and improvements to provide overall service delivery excellence.

3. Act as key facilitator between stakeholders and senior management to promote clear communication and understanding of RCB services and facilitate informed business decision-making processes in the pursuit of enhanced service delivery.

4. In collaboration with senior management, determine the overall business development, improvement and marketing strategies for the Centre to meet its research and business objectives.

5. Develop and communicate corresponding plans to drive forward these strategies.  Work with key senior staff in the Centre to drive forward plans, managing change sensitively within a unified, coherent quality-focussed environment.

6. Collate complex and varied information and create reports to provide oversight and inform progress against agreed strategies to senior management. Propose relevant key performance indicators and lead on their introduction within Centre processes.  Analyse trends/data and make proposals to learn from and build on knowledge obtained, including benchmarking against best industry practices.

7. Advise on financial planning and budgeting, developing financial models, plans and forecasts in collaboration with senior management and finance staff.  Assist with the definition and operation of effective financial control and decision making, especially in the areas of project delivery and cost modelling, in particular focusing on improvements in cost recovery for sustainability and future growth.

8. Drive key research funding bids and core infrastructure grant applications, leading on related bid processes and pitches to potential funders (both internal and external to the University) in support of income generation.

9. Identify new and innovative funding sources and initiatives - internal, public and commercial – for example in the areas of IT infrastructure, core staffing and data strategy, to support sustainability of the Centre.

10. Evaluate and respond to key performance indicators relating to the implementation, measurement and review of successful approaches, including assessing the current and future capability needed by the research and business functions, the role of staff engagement and business partners, and the appropriate mix of marketing activities and approaches.

11. Working with senior colleagues, design, co-ordinate and implement continual process improvements across RCB, ensuring that they are understood and communicated to both staff and stakeholders and continually reviewed and evaluated for enhanced effectiveness.

12.  Publicise the achievements and services of the Centre by identifying opportunities for marketing and promotion, acting as an advocate for the Centre at public events with government, charity and commercial funding bodies, and lead on the delivery of promotional materials and website content for RCB and GCTU.

13. Duties of the post outlined are not exhaustive and the post-holder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such duties as may be reasonably expected. The duties of the post will be subject to review in line with changing requirements, both internal and external.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary professional knowledge and management skills in a similar or number of different specialist roles.

OR

Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, 10 or 11 (Ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent, including being professionally qualified in relevant discipline, with a broad range of professional experience in relevant roles.

Desirable:

B1 Masters of Business Administration (MBA) or similar business or management qualification.

B2 Knowledge of the organisational, funding and support requirements applying to key research areas such as clinical trials, data governance, software delivery, hardware infrastructure and big data.

B2 Knowledge of the legislation and regulations applying to clinical trials and data governance, including principles of Good Clinical Practice and governance requirements applying to quality management (specifically ISO 9001) and information security (specifically ISO 27001 and GDPR).

Skills

Essential:

C1 Well developed analytical skills, including critical assessment of data and financial information, with proven ability to formulate clear policy, advice and guidance relevant to business development and engagement.

C2 Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with and influence a diverse range of colleagues and clients in a positive, collaborative and empowering way which takes into account differing priorities and competing interests, tackling problems and delivering effective solutions.

C3 Strong ability to lead and manage complex organisational challenges and changes, applying tact and diplomacy in sensitive or contentious issues.

C4 Excellent communication and listening skills, both verbal and written.

C5 Excellent presentation skills.

C6 Well developed skills in content formulation (e.g. web page content).

C7 Ability to show commitment to organisational values along with an understanding of the ‘bigger picture’ in the introduction of innovative and progressive solutions.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Track record of effectively planning and managing business development and improvement opportunities, and supporting organisational change in a collaborative and high performing environment.

E2 Experience of working in partnership with senior colleagues to formulate, develop and implement effective strategies and major projects.

E3 Experience of customer focussed service promotion and effective relationship building at all levels, both internal and external to the organisation.

E4 Extensive experience of identifying and securing significant levels of funding (public, commercial).

E5 Extensive experience of successful presentation of organisational successes, services  and goals in support of promotional, funding and development goals including, as example, presenting to government, charity and commercial bodies; development of publicity materials (including website content); presenting at national and international events/conferences.

E7 Experience of financial management, developing costing models and/or experience of applying for funding.

Desirable:

F1 Operational knowledge of research, infrastructure funding systems/opportunities and/or experience of developing detailed costing models.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £46,047 - £53,353 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term for 3 years.
