Job description

Turning Passion into Purpose. The School of Engineering at London South Bank University has recently created a 5g Innovation centre in Croydon in partnership with Croydon Council. As part of the centre development, the School is looking for a passionate, motivated, and pro-active Business Development Manager (BDM), who can hit the ground running in order to expand the centre’s business partner portfolio and increase enterprise and knowledge exchange income.

The BDM will be responsible for creating, supporting and strategically planning opportunities for research and enterprise collaborations, education opportunities, training, short courses and apprenticeships relevant to the School’s research and teaching streams, working alongside Research Centres and Course Directors to develop new opportunities. The BDM will work closely with staff, academic staff within the School, Research and Innovation Services and others to leverage the School’s expertise for commercial and reputational benefit.  

This position will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including small/large private/public national and international organisations.

This is a full time, fixed-term 24-month contract position, with the possibility to extend. An immediate start or early 2024 start is available. 

About You:
We are looking to hear from candidates who have the following skills/experience:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent.
  • Relevant Business Development experience in an academic environment is essential; Experience in or an understanding of the wider Engineering sector would be highly desirable.
  • A proven ability to quickly assimilate technical language and be able to clearly and effectively communicate this to external audiences.
  • Proven ability to grow revenue from commercial activity in a University environment and/or, in the private sector. This will include demonstrable experience in identifying and exploiting new markets as well as new clients.
  • An ability to hit the ground running, with an understanding of the appropriate funding available to support university business collaboration, and a demonstrable track record of achieving success through funded partnerships. This includes writing bids and proposals for UKRI and other funding organisations.
