We have an exciting opportunity at the Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell (MLC) to join our expanding Engineering and Estates team. 

We are excited to offer the role of Building Services Maintenance Assistant, and are looking for a motivated, hands-on, and positive individual who either has experience of working in the building trade or has an engineering background. 

The post-holder will undertake general maintenance to the Estate, offering a range of existing skills to enable the carrying out of general repairs and maintenance.  Working on a single site, the role is 36 hours per week, and is located on the Harwell Science Campus, Didcot.  All tools, PPE and uniform are provided, with overtime available as well as a generous annual leave allowance and employee benefits. 

There is potential within the role for varied training and upskilling, with potential opportunities to gain experience of working on the wider building services systems and to gain mechanical or electrical knowledge through external and internal training programmes. 

Main Duties/Key Responsibilities: 

  • Carry out general maintenance to all buildings, including minor decorating, carpentry work and minor plumbing repairs
  • Procure materials, components, and spares
  • Carry out and assist with day-to-day building maintenance work
  • Carry out visual checks of plant and equipment
  • Carry out routine equipment checks (training will be provided)
  • Use the Planet FM software to manage work requests as well as planned and preventative maintenance
  • Deliver a high level of customer service
  • Assist with site issues and fault finding and as and when necessary
  • Assist in general office/laboratory moves and relocation of large equipment
  • Ensure that all work carried out on the MRC estate is completed in a safe and professional manner, working within risk assessments and standard operating procedures
  • Work with apprentices and assist with their mentoring and development
  • Champion the Engineering & Estates service in a positive manner
  • Attend appropriate training to support the role and service delivery
  • Be open to assisting all trades within the team and, with the correct training, be able to complete tasks away from your core skills
  • Take on additional nominated person responsibilities if required (training will be given)
  • Take on the role of first aider (training will be given)
  • To be available during silent hours if required, as part of a planned rota (subject to management approval and operational requirements, inclusive of additional allowance)

Education/Qualifications/Training Required:

 Essential:

  • City & Guilds levels 2 & 3 (or an NVQ accredited equivalent) in a trade or engineering discipline, or demonstrable proven experience working within a similar role

 Desirable:

  • Experience in the building services industry
  • Experience of working in a facilities maintenance environment

Previous Work Experience Required: 

Essential:

  • Good knowledge of varied maintenance; a passion for fixing things and problem solving
  • Confident to work at heights using ladders and access equipment where required
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 

Desirable: 

  • Experience of working within a scientific establishment, including knowledge of barrier restrictions
  • Experience of working in a facilities maintenance environment
  • UK driving licence

Knowledge and Experience: 

Essential: 

  • Prior experience in working in an engineering or maintenance role
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Executive (HSE) legislation
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team

Personal skills/Behaviours/Qualities: 

Essential:

  • Conscientious
  • Self-motivated
  • Punctual team player with excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a methodical and structured way with confidence in dealing with suppliers and service users
