Job summary

The Department of Brain Sciences is hiring a postdoctoral research associate to join our program of research funded by the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). You will be working with Professor Adam Hampshire and colleagues applying state-of-the-art online testing technology to study cognitive function at large scale in clinical populations. Example populations that we currently are studying include people with Long COVID, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease and Traumatic Brain Injury. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with members of the Hampshire Lab who are working on cognitive diagnostic technologies, as well as collaborators who are using that technology with patients in a variety of clinical cohort and healthcare settings. This position is ideal for someone with a background in cognitive neuroscience, ideally with computational skills. The post is for 2 years in the first instance.


Duties and responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing patient-focused research studies with our state-of-the-art online assessment technology that combines state of the art computational models with technology for precision online cognitive assessment via peoples’ home devices.
  • Orchestrating deployment of the technology with the control and patient cohorts.
  • Support of broader collaborative studies that are utilising the technology.
  • Production of research articles based on the large and diverse population data collected using this technology.
  • Undertaking analyses relating cognitive-assessment data to other data types, e.g., brain imaging, clinical histories and biomarkers.
  • Mentoring of more junior lab members and student project supervision.
  • Contribution to teaching workshops as part of the MSc Translational Neuroscience.

Essential requirements

This role is suited to a person with cognitive neuroscience skills, including in human cognitive assessment, computational modelling, brain imaging and machine learning. Other essential requirements are:

  • Hold a PhD in neuroscience, psychology or a closely related discipline (*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant)
  • Experience of dealing with human cognitive assessment data
  • Knowledge of human cognition and task design
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical methods and statistical procedures
  • Ability to program in MATLAB or Python
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals

Hybrid working may be considered for this role.  Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
