The Milner Therapeutics Institute (MTI) is a research Institute at the University of Cambridge, located on the Cambridge Biomedical Research Campus, within the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre built in 2019. The overarching vision of the MTI is to harness academic excellence to accelerate the drug development process and convert pioneering science into novel therapies. The Institute provides a unique working environment, with start-ups, academics and pharma companies working side by side at the bench. Working across multiple therapeutic areas, it has one of the largest concentrations of expertise in functional genomics at the University, with access to a breadth of expertise in technical development and screening across academia and industry.

The computational research group led by Dr Namshik Han is developing cutting-edge computational methods and applying them to identify new, or better, drug targets from the analysis of biomedical datasets across therapeutic areas. The areas of research include the development and application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical and mathematical approaches to pharmacogenomics and drug discovery.

This post is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral scientist to work on a ground-breaking, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative project named as iLUNG funded by UKRI BBSRC. Our team includes Dr Joo-Hyeon Lee at the Wellcome ¿ Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, Dr Yan Yan Shery Huang at the Department of Engineering, and Dr Frank McCaughan at the Department of Medicine. Working alongside other academic researchers within the MTI and throughout the University of Cambridge, the role will provide substantial scope for originality, interpretation and presentation of results.

Applicants will have a PhD in computational biology, statistics or a related scientific discipline and a statistical background in machine-learning or Bayesian techniques. It is essential that they have expertise in computational analysis on both biological and clinical data with experience in machine learning and statistical computing software, such as Python, R and MatLab. Experience in the use of relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL is required, as is experience in Next Generation Sequencing data analysis such as WGS, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq and RNA-seq (bulk, single-cell and spatial), and experience in integration and curation of large-scale databases such as LungMAP, Human Cell Atlas and GTEx.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
