Offer Description
The Department of Engineering Science intends to appoint an Associate Professor of Engineering Science (Electrical Engineering/Quantum Technologies) with effect from 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will work at the Department of Engineering Science (Central Oxford, OX1 3EJ) and will be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Balliol College under arrangements described in the Job Description. The combined University and College salary will be on a scale currently from £52,815 to £70,918 per annum plus additional benefits (see the Job Description for full details). The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
This appointment will add further strength to the Department’s research in quantum technologies, and to the substantial activities in Quantum Technologies across the University, with the intention of being able to offer specialist engineering courses in this area. It is expected that the appointee will become a member of the (proposed) Oxford Quantum Institute and contribute to OQI activities for at least the first 5 years of appointment. Applications are welcome from candidates with an internationally leading track record in the (broadly defined) area of the engineering of quantum systems, including photonic systems as applied to quantum technologies, quantum photonics, quantum computer architectures, or similar areas; with a strong focus on the engineering aspects of these topics.
Candidates will have a strong research background, including a doctorate, and will be expected to engage in and lead high-quality original research. They will be able to secure external research funding and engage in the management of research projects. This will require the supervision of research students and research assistants. They will lecture undergraduate courses and give six hours of tutorials per week during the eight weeks of the undergraduate term. They will have the ability to teach effectively, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, and have excellent interpersonal skills for undertaking tutorial teaching.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing the Department’s activities in Quantum Technologies, both in research and in teaching undergraduates who wish to specialise in this area of electrical engineering in their third and fourth years. At the same time, the new post-holder should be able to teach small group tutorials at College in core engineering syllabus, specifically in electrical/electronic and information engineering, energy systems, and mathematics.

Please quote this in all correspondence. The closing date for applications is 12:00 noon on Thursday 1 February 2024. Interviews will take place in March or April 2024.
