About the position

The Department of Computer Science (IDI), group for Data and Artificial Intelligence (DART), has a vacancy for the position of associate professor in Database Systems, with focus on large-scale query processing.

Query processing has been an important research area for several decades. The advent of Big Data has created new challenges that can only be solved by efficient use of computing resources, typically achieved by novel algorithms, indexing techniques, and often in combination with appropriate parallelization of queries. Our group has a strong history in large-scale query processing, dating back to the 70s, and we now want to strengthen our team with one more associate professor.

Applicants must have a formal background in computer science, with research focus on large-scale query processing in databases. 

The position reports to head of department.

Duties of the position

  • Contribute towards research and research-based education in databases in cooperation with the existing staff.
  • Initiate and take part in national and international research projects
  • Participate in administrative activities, such as hiring committees, educational and research boards, etc., that are conducted at IDI.
  • Contribute to an excellent learning environment in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. The associate professor is expected to teach courses at all levels and should supervise master's and Doctoral students.

Required selection criteria

The position of Associate Professor within Database Systems requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • PhD (or academic work of the same scope and quality) within database systems. 
  • Research experience within database query processing (algorithms and indexing techniques).
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of database system internals.
  • Peer reviewed publications from the top venues in the area of database research.

You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of master's and doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated. 

NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA. This means that we pay special attention to the quality and professional breadth of these works. We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years. 

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Competence in parallel query processing or experience in database systems development will be considered a plus.

Salary and conditions

In a position as associate professor (Førsteamanuensis code 1011) is normally from NOK 560 000 to NOK 760 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight. 

 Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
