The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences is Finland’s most high-profile and extensive hub of research and teaching in the field. The Faculty educates experts to meet the needs of universities, research institutes, government, schools and the business sector.

The Faculty is comprised of three research programmes: Ecosystems and Environment , Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, and Molecular and Integrative Biosciences.

The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences also has biological stations at Kilpisjärvi, in Lapland, and Lammi, in Southern Finland, as well as a Zoological station at Tvärminne on the coast of the Baltic Sea.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN COASTAL ECOLOGY

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate professorship (tenure track) depending on their qualifications and career stage.

We seek an internationally competitive mid-career researcher with a strong academic track-record in aquatic ecology. The position will strengthen and expand the research done on ecological processes in coastal ecosystems and habitats. We are looking for candidates who would focus on developing a better understanding of dynamic coastal ecosystem processes in an ecosystem heavily affected by anthropogenic pressures, e.g. eutrophication and climate change, to support conservation and management efforts. Particular expertise may relate to, e.g. the influence of multiple stressors and habitat degradation on the functioning and resilience of coastal ecosystems. The appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaborations with other staff members and participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as the documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.

An appointee to an associate professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications, teaching experience and pedagogical training as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education.

Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience, and elected positions in Finnish and international organizations. Societal interaction shall also be considered important. The teaching of the appointee will mainly be allocated to the Bachelor of Science Programme in Environmental Sciences and the Master’s Programme in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability (ECGS).

There is no requirement for foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish to be proficient in Finnish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good skills in English.

Annual gross salary for an associate professor amounts to 50,500 - 69,500 euros and for full professor to 65,000 - 97,500 euros.
