The Mathematical Institute proposes to appoint two Associate Professors (or Professors) of Applied Mathematics (with a preference for areas relating to Data-Driven Mechanistic Modelling in Mathematical Biology/Medicine or Climate Change understood broadly (climate, energy, sustainability) from 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidates will be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship at either St Hilda’s or Keble College, under arrangements described in the attached job description.

The Associate Professors will join a thriving research community of applied mathematicians at Oxford, at the world-leading Mathematical Institute. They will play a leading role in helping to build further collaborations across the global research community, in addition to engaging with outreach activities to support the department in achieving its strategic aim to improve the diversity of its undergraduate and postgraduate student body, and in particular its gender diversity. They will be responsible for carrying out, disseminating the results of, obtaining funding for, and supervising research at a high international standard in the field of applied mathematics, with a preference for areas relating to Data-Driven Mechanistic Modelling in Mathematical Biology/Medicine or Climate Change understood broadly (climate, energy, sustainability), and for teaching a range of topics in mathematics via lectures, classes and tutorials. A complete list of duties and responsibilities is set out in the attached job description.
The successful candidates will have a PhD in mathematics or a closely related subject, and will be committed to improving diversity within the discipline. They will demonstrate the ability and/or potential to carry out research at a high international level in applied mathematics and to teach effectively across a range of topics in mathematics.
The Mathematical Institute is proud to hold a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award and a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our commitment to openness, inclusivity and transparency, we would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in academic posts at Oxford. The University is committed to equality and valuing diversity.
Activities involving the promotion of diversity in mathematics will be taken into account when balancing overall workload. Departmental duties will be reduced in the first year of the appointment.
The department was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver Award in 2016 in recognition of its commitment to addressing gender inequalities, to tackling the unequal representation of women in science, and to improving career progression for female academics. Our family-friendly policies include the right to apply for flexible working, hybrid working, and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence. We are committed to ensuring an inclusive interview process and will reimburse up to £250 towards any additional care costs (for a dependent child or adult) incurred as a result of attending an interview for this position, which may not be applicable if the interviews are held remotely.
