Please note: We are advertising both Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, however there is only 1 post available
The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham wishes to appoint an Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning to drive forward our exciting portfolio of work in the fields of spatial planning and sustainable urban development.
We are seeking a motivated and ambitious person to contribute to the continuing development of our Planning research, education and professional engagement activities. We are keen to attract candidates whose work engages with contemporary Planning policy and practice agendas in the UK and internationally. Applicants with research and teaching experience around the interaction of Planning with urban regeneration and renewal, housing development or sustainable place-making agendas would be particularly welcome.
You will have a strong track record of securing external research funding from sources such as UK Research Councils, international funding agencies, industry, charitable bodies and government sectors. You will also have extensive experience of delivering high quality publications, and engaging with professional and policy making communities to develop your research and teaching activities. An ability to forge networks in the Planning and built environment sectors and to produce research with impact on practice and policy agendas would be particularly attractive.
You will have the opportunity to play a significant role in the delivery and further development of our dynamic portfolio of Planning education, rooted in our strong engagement with Planning agendas and practitioners in the Birmingham city-region. This includes contributions to our highly successful RTPI-accredited MSc programme, our growing Level 7 Chartered Town Planner Degree Apprenticeship, as well as our undergraduate BSc in Geography & Urban and Regional Planning. There is also scope to contribute to our development of CPD and knowledge transfer activity with industry and practitioner partners. Membership of the RTPI, or eligibility to become a member would be desirable, although not essential.
The candidate will have the opportunity to forge exciting interdisciplinary research and teaching collaborations with colleagues across the university. This includes School colleagues working on climate change, green infrastructure, and air pollution issues, as well as others in fields such as Engineering, Environmental and Public Health, and Social Sciences. The newly launched Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action and the Centre for Urban Wellbeing also offer unique opportunities to engage with University priority areas.
