The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics and Magdalen College are seeking to appoint an Associate Professor (or Professor) of Syntax and Semantics. The post is offered on a full-time basis, available from 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The postholder will play a substantial role in delivering and co-ordinating undergraduate and graduate teaching in Syntax and Semantics (with some teaching in Pragmatics likely to be included). They will engage in research activities at an international level, take part in university examining and assessing, and manage a range of administration, pastoral and outreach duties.
The successful candidate will be elected to a (Non-Tutorial) Fellowship by Special Election at Magdalen College, to which a Special Lecturership will be attached. This will involve organising the tuition in Linguistics for undergraduates taking the relevant papers in Modern Languages, Modern Languages & Linguistics, and Psychology, Philosophy, & Linguistics; and assisting in the selection of, and acting as College Adviser to, Magdalen’s graduate students in Linguistics.
This post is open to candidates at all career stages, ranging from those who have just completed a PhD/DPhil to senior scholars who have already attained the highest international standing. Candidates will have, or be able to demonstrate the promise of, a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching at a level appropriate to their career stage, together with clear plans for research which demonstrate an ability and willingness to maintain that record. They should also have an ability and willingness to obtain external funding for individual or larger research projects.
Applications are particularly welcomed from women and Black and Minority Ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
Circumstances such as caring responsibilities, ill health or disability may result in the quantity of a candidate's outputs being less than might otherwise be expected, therefore when considering a candidate's research and publication record, career breaks will be taken into consideration.
Application process:
Information about the application process, as well as the full list of responsibilities and selection criteria can be obtained from the job description below (Vacancy ID: 169868).
Queries about the post should be addressed to Professor Philomen Probert, Chair of the Board of the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics ([email protected]). All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon (UK time) on Tuesday 23rd January 2024.
Interviews are expected to be held in person in Oxford in mid to late February 2024.
