About the job

A full-time, permanent position as Associate Professor in modern/contemporary English-language literature is available with the English section of the Department of Language and Literature (ISL), NTNU, with an anticipated start date of 1 January 2020. The English section currently has 21 permanent employees within three broad areas of specialization linguistics, literature, and cultural studies of which six are permanent staff in literature studies.  The literature group of the section is actively engaged in individual and collaborative research projects, and is involved in local and wider networks which cross disciplinary and linguistic boundaries.  It offers Bachelor, Master’s, and PhD education in campus-based programs , and offers continuing education credits in an active distance program. Both campus and distance programs are grounded in research-based teaching.

Currently, literature studies within the English section concentrate primarily on British 18th - and 19th-century literature and culture, and North American 19th- through 21st-century literature and culture, with an emphasis on book history and print culture; digital humanities; environmental humanities; transnational studies, rights, and migration; gender studies and critical theory; adaptation studies; theater history; life writing; speculative fiction; poetry; and archival work and development of the archive.

A broad spectrum of students pursue literary studies in Trondheim, with a significant number following the 5-year Language studies with Teacher Education Program.  The themes and issues addressed within Anglophone literature play an important role in the national teaching plan for English at the secondary school level.  The literature courses are also part of the English 1-year (årsstudium), BA, and Master’s degree programs, as well as the European Studies programs.

Responsibilities 

It is expected that the employee will

  • pursue research within the discipline and publish regularly in respected international outlets.
  • teach and supervise in relevant courses at all levels, both within the regular and teacher training programs and EVU (distance and continuing education) offering.  While most of the teaching may be research based, the employee must be prepared to teach and supervise outside of his/her research area.
  • participate in exam work as well as administrative assignments.
  • contribute actively to student recruitment and program quality development.
  • lead and initiate research, pursue research supervision, and work actively to establish externally financed research projects.

The language of teaching and supervision for this position is English.  Administration in the department is predominantly conducted in Norwegian.

Required qualifications 

  • a PhD in a relevant area of modern/contemporary English-language literature;
  • an active research profile and well-developed plans for future projects and possible collaborations;
  • a track record of publications (in print or under contract) in international, refereed venues;
  • experience in designing and delivering research-based and survey courses in Anglophone literature;
  • excellent competence in oral and written English.

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

Qualifications which are desirable (in no particular order)

  • advanced pedagogical experience, including curriculum development, supervision at graduate   levels, development of new teaching methods, and working in both campus and online/distance education courses;
  • active involvement in externally funded research projects
  • a record of administrative service;
  • ability and experience with interdisciplinary work;
  • experience of public engagement and outreach;
  • knowledge of the role of English in the Norwegian education system and society.

Application Process

The application process consists of three stages: 

  • initial evaluation of submitted applications, leading, in the case of certain candidates*, to a committee request for copies of academic publications;
  • committee evaluation of applications and academic publications, summarized in a report of candidates’ qualifications;
  • following the advice of a second committee, the holding of interviews and evaluative trial lectures (if required).
  • *After the initial deadline, shortlisted applications will be forwarded on to Stage 2 of the evaluative process. All candidates will receive feedback at the end of Stage 1, irrespective of the success of their applications.

    Applicants who progress to Stage 2 will be invited to submit a body of academic work that is perceived to be important for the competency committee’s evaluation. It will be possible to submit up to 5 separate works. These works may comprise journal articles, book chapters, or excerpts from larger academic works (such as monograph chapters), as well as unpublished materials (such as PhD chapters).

    At Stage 3, a short list of applicants will be invited to deliver trial teaching sessions, and to attend interviews.

    NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA.  This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight. 

    Payment and working conditions

    The position of Associate Professor (Førsteamanuensis), is remunerated based on the national salary scheme, with a minimum gross salary of NOK 490.900,-. The successful applicant will normally be remunerated by NOK 544.400 - NOK 607.700,- . Two percent of gross salary is deducted, and paid into the State Pension Scheme.

    If the candidate does not have a formal qualification in pedagogy, s/he will be required to take an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of employment.  NTNU offers one such appropriate course.  If the candidate has extensive pedagogical competence that can be documented, exemption from such a course might be obtained in some instances.

    It is expected that the employee will establish residency such that s/he can attend work on a daily basis.

    It is expected that a new employee who is not proficient in a Scandinavian language will, within three years of employment, be able to demonstrate knowledge of Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language, on a par with Level 3 of the “Norwegian for Foreigners ” study program within the Department of Language and Literature.  Time will be allocated in the workplan of a new employee to attend the “Norwegian for Foreigners ” course.

    We conduct research and teaching in comparative literature, English, French, Spanish, German, Scandinavian studies, linguistics, phonetics, applied linguistics, sign language and interpreting, and cultural history. We are also responsible for the five-year master’s programmes in teacher education (lektorutdanning) in language subjects.
