Computer networks are today ubiquitous, and along several axes constitute a significant part of modern society's critical infrastructure. Knowledge of computer networks in general, and further development and research within the subject area, in particular, is therefore of the greatest importance for managing and securing today's infrastructures, as well as further developing the subject field and facilitating the desired societal development. As an associate professor in computer networks and high performance somputing at NTNU, Norway's largest university, you will both take part in educating the next generation of computer engineers and network administrators, as well as contribute to moving the research front in computer networks – the latter preferably with a focus on tightly connected networks used as the communication backbone in supercomputers, etc. (cf. HPC, High Performance Computing). 

You will be a part of the Communication Technology discipline at the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (IIK). Your office and workplace will be at Campus Gjøvik. This discipline has employees in both Gjøvik and Trondheim that work closely with each other across both campuses. The environment is characterized by great comfort between permanent and temporary staff as well as close contact with engaged students. 

Teaching and guidance will primarily be linked to the popular bachelor's program Digital Infrastructure and Cyber Security, a study program whose graduates are in high demand by both society and business. 

Your research will make up approximately half of the position and you  will contribute to the overall research activity of the Networking Research Group at IIK. 

Your immediate leader is the Head of discipline. 

Duties of the position

  • Teaching and supervision within computer networks and related disciplines. 
  • Research within your subject area and supervise students at all levels. 
  • Initiate and participate in national and international research projects, as well as actively work to acquire external funds. 
  • Research dissemination and popular science dissemination, as well as looking after and further developing industry contacts for the study program. 
  • Active participation in building a good learning environment at the department, in collaboration with colleagues, students and external partners. 
  • Participation in the professional community's and the department's other activities. 

Required qualifications 

  • You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of communication technology and high performance computing, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 
  • Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within the field of computer networks or a comparable relevant field. If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation that you obtained the doctoral degree, must be presented before you can take up the position.
  • Relevant fields include communication technology, information security, computer science and informatics.
  • You must document competence (teaching, research and/or practice) in as many of the following topics as possible:
    • TCP/IP, Internet and/or high-speed networks
    • Network security, resilience and/or security architecture
    • Networking for HPC, HPC clusters and/or data center networking
    • Performance measurements of networks, preferably within HPC
    • Network administration
  • You need good written and oral English language skills.

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU .

  • Ability to get along and collaborate with colleagues, students and business. In teaching, all academic staff work in teams.
  • Academically curious and interested in teaching, research and communication; both the subject field and pedagogy are in continuous development.

Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.

Salary and conditions

As a associate professor you are normally paid from gross NOK 615 000 – NOK 775 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants,  and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

  • Academic works – published or unpublished – that you wish to be considered during assessment of your application (up to 10 items)
  • A description of the scientific works you consider most relevant, which you particularly wish to be factored into the assessment
  • A list of your previous works, with details on where they have been published
  • Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope
  • Names and contact information for three relevant referees

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA . This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.

Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Candidates of interest will be invited to an interview, and to deliver a trial teaching session.
