Birmingham City University is a thriving, modern university with a rich history in the city and the wider region.  With 25,000 students we are focused on teaching excellence and research excellence and place particular emphasis on practice-based programmes that support student employability.  To support the development of the School of Health Sciences we are seeking an exceptional candidate to join us as Associate Head of School.

As a key member of the School leadership team, you will be expected to support the Head of School in providing strategic direction and academic leadership for the School of Health Sciences, making a significant contribution to University and Faculty priorities.  This role offers an exciting opportunity for an academic leader to support the leadership of this growing School. Candidates will demonstrate the intellectual, strategic and operational leadership qualities to engage colleagues, students and stakeholders in a strategic direction that develops new opportunities and builds on existing strengths, past successes and enhances the School and Faculty position. The post holder will support the Head of School to lead the core activities of teaching, research and external income generation and to build upon our national and international reputation and to foster a spirit of continuous improvement.

The post holder will work with the Head of School to provide leadership and management for the School.  The key workstreams of the role will be agreed with the Head of School as determined by School and Faculty priorities, however it is expected that your experience to date will mean that you will be able to support the Head of School – and lead as appropriate – on the student experience, portfolio, partnerships, resource management and internationalisation.

The post holder will:

  • Work with the Head of School to develop an effective basis for education provision, research and third-stream funding.
  • Lead on specific projects within the School as required.
  • Work with the Head of School to manage the quality of the academic and practice provision within the School.
  • Work with the Head of School to proactively seek opportunities to develop new course provision locally, nationally and internationally, in addition to developing new ways of working and modes of delivery.
  • Work with the School Quality Enhancement Lead and Heads of Department to monitor and improve achievement against course benchmarks and standards.
  • Work with Heads of Departments and admissions tutors to ensure that all academic provision within the School is appropriately marketed and the student recruitment targets are achieved.
  • Line manage staff within the School Management Team.
  • Deputise for the Head of School and undertake such duties relevant to the School and Faculty as considered appropriate by the Head of School.

As an outstanding individual within the disciplines of the Allied Health Professions or Health Sciences, you will have appropriate management and leadership experience within one or more Higher Education Institutions.  You will demonstrate clarity of understanding in respect of the regulatory environment in which health professions, and Universities more generally, operate in.

Applicants must be educated to post-graduate level in a relevant discipline and should have [or be working towards] a PhD/ Doctorate with a track record of research/scholarly activity and/or professional recognition at a national level.  Candidates are sought that have the energy, passion and ambition to have a real impact in developing the School.  The post-holder will be strategic leader with evidence of successful academic leadership, a focus on curriculum, student experience and business development, and be able to help build the School’s international reputation.  The appointee must have proven academic leadership experience within pre-registration health professional education and the ability to lead a growing and highly motivated team of academics and students.

The School of Health Sciences at Birmingham City University is a dynamic and diverse academic community, with a track record of delivering excellent education and achieving high graduate employability across our disciplines. Our location at our City South Campus in Edgbaston is home to our Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences and benefitted from a £41 million campus development in 2018. The campus provides a modern, vibrant learning environment which houses superb facilities, including teaching and research laboratories, clinical simulation facilities, a sports therapy clinic, nutrition science labs, subject specific classrooms equipped with the latest teaching technology, a biomedical engineering lab and a sports hall. Across the Faculty we have a wide range of courses in pre and post registration health professions, education, social work, life sciences, and sport.
