We’re looking for someone with the passion to strengthen our positive culture and shape, own and deliver a key part of our strategic plan.

Role: Associate Director of People
Hours: Part time 21-28 hours per week (part time or full time will be considered from 24-35 hours per week)
Salary: £46,533 - £51,362 (Pro rata)
Contract: Permanent
Closing date: 18 March 2024, 9am

Part business, part charity, part membership body – Bristol SU is a seriously fun place to work. Our professional staff do something extraordinary every day: we support student leaders to give people a voice in their education, help people get the most out of their student experience and help people make the change they want in the world. We have over 26,000 members, 400 clubs and societies, a diverse range of professional services, and an innovative strategy that will help to create an inclusive and supportive University community.

It's an exciting time to join Bristol SU. We are one year into a new strategy, which has people as our core focus. A key strategic priority is to enable talented people to deliver quality outcomes, in a compassionate culture. We are already an excellent place to work with 91% of our staff feeling we have strong values and ethics, and 88% of our staff would recommend us as a place to work. We provide excellent benefits for our staff and go beyond the expected wherever possible. There is still more we can do.

You will be given autonomy to shape, own and deliver Bristol SU’s People Strategy and be part of a motivated and high performing senior management team.

  • You'll be able to help us attract and retain the best and most diverse talent.
  • You'll have experience in advancing inclusivity and accessibility.
  • You'll be able to implement people strategies and frameworks that support our team to achieve.

Key objectives:

  • Ensuring we attract and retain the best and most diverse people.
  • Supporting our teams to succeed with excellent central frameworks for performance, planning, internal communication and governance.
  • Advancing inclusivity and accessibility - ensuring our policies and practices are genuinely sector-leading.

In the first year key projects for you and your team would include:

  • Guiding the development of a new approach to Learning and Development
  • Leading us towards Disability Confidence
  • Review and implement change to our reward (pay) and benefits.
  • Selecting and implementing a new HR System

This role is part time, between 3 and 4 days per week. We aim to be a flexible employer and we support and promote part time working, including within the senior management team. We ask all our team to work from the office for 40% of their time to help maintain our 'one team' culture.

We are open minded about your professional background, though expect you will have operated in a HR position and can articulate how and why effective people strategies enable people to deliver. There is no expectation that you will have worked in an SU before, and we will consider the transferable backgrounds carefully. We are also open-minded to flexible working requests.

Because you’re excited to make a difference! You will be given autonomy to shape, own and deliver a key part of our strategic plan and be part of an established and high performing senior management team.

We offer lots of great benefits including enhanced pay for parents taking maternity, adoption or shared parental leave, a competitive salary for the non-profit sector, a generous pension scheme and at least 40 days’ holiday. We’re committed to helping you achieve a healthy work-life balance through flexible working and are open to considering requests for part-time working. We provide professional training so that whatever your chosen field of work, with the right mix of challenge and support, you’ll gain fantastic experience, and room to develop and advance your career.

We are proud to have been recognised through numerous accreditations and awards that demonstrate our commitment to creating a positive and supportive culture. We have appeared in the Inclusive Companies top 100 list and have won a number of awards for our commitment to diversity, including best Students' Union. We also won a Third Sector Excellence Award at the 2018 Investors in People Awards. No wonder 93% of our employees would recommend Bristol SU as a great place to work!

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are central to life at Bristol SU. We approach our work with positivity and celebrate our diverse and unique communities. Our people are proud of our values and care about creating diverse and supportive communities that are inclusive of age, disability, gender, identity, race, religion, sexual orientation and experience.

Be yourself, be proud of the work you do and build a career in a place that knows different is good.
